Kanye West joins front row at London Fashion Week (AP)

LONDON ? Celebrities including Kanye West and Rosario Dawson packed the front row at London Fashion Week on Monday, as the style extravaganza built up to its starriest day with shows by Christopher Kane and Burberry Prorsum.

Kane, the young Scottish talent whose shows have become London Fashion Week's hottest ticket in the past few seasons, wowed the crowds with a collection rich with brocade, fringe appliques and glittering embellishments.

Surprisingly, the designer chose to pair his glamorous clothes with flat, rubber flip-flop like sandals ? a look sure to divide opinion.

Front row fans included Kanye West, American Vogue's Anna Wintour and Samantha Cameron, Prime Minister David Cameron's wife and patron of Fashion Week.

Also showing their spring and summer 2012 collections on day four of Fashion Week were Pringle of Scotland and Burberry, two "heritage" brands steeped in British history.

Pringle showed its first womenswear collection to be headed by newcomer Alistair Carr, who joined the brand in March after a stint at Balenciaga in Paris.

Drawing inspiration from the brand's 200 years of history, the British designer took Pringle's iconic argyle patterns and twinsets and modernized them for an elegant collection.

There were variations on the twinset throughout, with some cardigans unbuttoned at the back. The argyle pattern was updated as a colorful abstract print on light sweaters and shirts. Silhouettes were relaxed and unfussy, and pops of canary yellow and turquoise provided some pleasing contrast to a palette dominated by white, grays and blush pink.

"I think he's supersonic," said Tilda Swinton, the "face" of Pringle.

"He's taken an old lady texture and recycled the concept to make something modern. It's really clever," she told The Associated Press, before going backstage to give Carr a big hug.

More new takes on old themes are expected later Monday at Burberry, typically the biggest and glossiest show at London Fashion Week.

Designer Christopher Bailey has been credited with revitalizing the historic brand and lifting its revenues since he joined a decade ago.

In recent years Bailey has focused on exploiting digital technology to bring its catwalk shows instantaneously to its millions of fans worldwide.

The company said that its newest innovation was to share every one of its models' looks on Twitter before the girls hit the runway later Monday, so that followers on the social media site could see the new collection even before those sitting in the front row.

To cater to its Chinese buyers, the brand also said it will be live streaming its show on Chinese websites.
