RealtyTrac: Hawaii home prices second only to Washington, D.C.

Staff Pacific Business News

Hawaii had the second-highest median home price in the nation in June, according to a report from RealtyTrac, which found that only the District of Columbia had higher housing prices.

The median price of a home in Hawaii as of June was $400,995, which was 4 percent higher than the same month in 2012. The median price in No. 1 Washington, D.C., was $460,000, and California was a distant third with a median price of $325,000.

Irvine, Calif.-based RealtyTrac said its first-ever U.S. residential sales report showed that the national median home price was $168,000, which was an increase of 5 percent from the same month in 2012.

Muted after 9/11, NSA critics find their voice

WASHINGTON (AP) ? After 9/11, there were no shades of gray. There are plenty now.

The vigorous debate over the collection of millions of Americans' phone records, underlined by a narrow House vote upholding the practice, buried any notion that it's out of line, even unpatriotic, to challenge the national security efforts of the government.

Democrats and Republicans, conservatives and liberals, joined in common cause against the Obama administration's aggressive surveillance, falling just short Wednesday night against a similarly jumbled and determined coalition of leaders and lawmakers who supported it.

It's not every day you see Republican Speaker John Boehner and Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi facing off together against their own parties' colleagues ? with an assist from Rep. Michele Bachmann, no less ? to help give President Barack Obama what he wanted. But that's what it took to overcome efforts to restrict the National Security Agency's surveillance program.

After the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, President George W. Bush warned the world "either you are with us or you are with the terrorists," period, and those few politicians who objected to anything the U.S. wanted to do for its national security looked like oddballs.

That remarkable political consensus cracked in the bog of the Iraq war, and argument returned, but the government has had little trouble holding on to its extraordinary counterterrorism tools.

What's changed?

The passage of time, for one thing, and the absence of another attack on the scale of 9/11. Americans have also discovered, through Edward Snowden's leaks, that surveillance doesn't start at the water's edge or stop with terrorist plotters in the homeland, but sweeps in the phone records of ordinary people indiscriminately.

Even in the frightening aftermath of 9/11, when large majorities told pollsters they were ready to trade in some personal protections for greater security, any effort to monitor phone calls or emails of average people was considered a step too far. In a Pew Research Center survey the week after the terrorist attacks, 70 percent said no to that.

Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona says memories of those days have faded and the political climate has changed.

"The stuff we went through last year about detainees we never would have gone through in 2002," he said Thursday. He was referring to the debate in Congress for two years straight over the indefinite detention of terrorist suspects, even U.S. citizens captured within the nation's borders.

The closeness of the House surveillance vote "says there's great and widespread concern about the extent of the NSA's activities," McCain said, "and that's why we need hearings in Congress." This, from a supporter of the NSA surveillance.

Concerns about drone use domestically, as well as the NSA's powers, have energized the debate in Congress, though they have hardly rolled back the national security apparatus. Lawmakers have prevailed repeatedly on votes to keep Guantanamo open for terrorist suspects and, on Wednesday, the House easily passed a nearly $600 billion defense spending bill once the air cleared from the surveillance showdown.

Public opinion appears to have shifted toward privacy but in measured ways.

A Washington Post-ABC News poll released Wednesday found rising concern about threats to privacy, with a majority saying the NSA's collection of phone and Internet data intrudes on people's rights.

Yet 57 percent said it's more important for the government to investigate terrorist threats, even at a cost to privacy, than for it to put privacy first. In 2002, that view was held even more strongly, by 79 percent.

Ever since the 2001 attacks, Congress has authorized and presidents of both parties have signed extensions of the powers to search records and conduct roving wiretaps in pursuit of terrorists, tools provided by the USA Patriot Act. The act passed in October 2001 with only one vote against it in the Senate, and with a lopsided 357-66 vote in the House.

Two years ago, it won yet another strong endorsement, renewed despite a delay achieved by Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, a tea party favorite though first and foremost a libertarian when it comes to the government exercising its national security powers.

The clash over the surveillance program Wednesday was the first chance for lawmakers to act since the breadth of the government's monitoring was exposed in classified documents leaked by Snowden, the former NSA systems analyst.

Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Mich., chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, implored fellow lawmakers to support the program, asking: "Have 12 years gone by and our memories faded so badly that we forgot what happened on Sept. 11?" In opposition, Republican colleague Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner of Wisconsin said the collection of phone records exceeds anything he foresaw when he helped to write the Patriot Act, and should be stopped.

In a sign of the program's iffy prospects, Boehner took the unusual step of casting a vote ? he normally doesn't ? to help keep it alive. The program survived on a vote of 217-205, capping a bipartisan struggle won by 134 Republicans and 83 Democrats joining in favor of the operation.

Against it: 94 Republicans and 111 Democrats ? losers of the vote but outliers no more.

Nexus 7 hands-on (2013) (update: video!)

New Nexus 7 handson

The Nexus 7 was a rather swell device when it was officially launched last year, and now we've had the opportunity to play with the next-gen version, which bumps the swellness factor a notch or two. The tablet, which boasts a 1080-quality display (1,920 x 1,200, to be precise) and Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, is being shown off after this morning's Breakfast with Sundar event -- which we suppose means we're now at brunch. We've grabbed a few images of the new tablet, seen below, and have added some early impressions after the break. Meet us there to see what we think.

Update: Hands-on video after the break!

Samsung Galaxy S3 Key Lime Pie Android 5.0

Device Updates is here for you, and hopefully there is an update in your future. Looks like Samsung might skip Android 4.2.2 for the SIII and the Note II, and just jump to Android 4.3. Sounds like a good idea to me, and HTC One users still have not seen any Android 4.2.2. Be patient my friends.

Suicide bomber attacks Iraq army convoy, killing 25

By Ziad al-Sinjary

MOSUL, Iraq (Reuters) - A suicide bomber attacked an Iraqi army convoy in the northern city of Mosul early on Monday, killing at least 22 soldiers and three passers-by, police said.

The bomber drove a vehicle packed with explosives up to a military convoy in the eastern Kokchali district of Mosul, 390 km (240 miles) north of Baghdad, before blowing himself and his car up.

"A suicide bomber was following the convoy and when it stopped in the middle of road, he detonated his vehicle right behind it," said a policeman at the scene who declined to be identified because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

A separate attack in western Mosul killed four policemen, police said.

It was not clear who was behind the blasts, but suicide bombings are the hallmark of al Qaeda, which has been regrouping in Mosul, Iraq's third-largest city and capital of the Sunni-dominated Nineveh province.

Insurgent groups such as al Qaeda have found willing recruits among Iraq's Sunni minority, which resents Shi'ite domination since the U.S.-led invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein in 2003.

The attacks are the latest in a campaign of violence across Iraq that has raised fears of a return to full-blown conflict in a country where Kurds, Shi'ite and Sunni Muslims have yet to find a stable way of sharing power.

Relations between Islam's two main denominations have been put under further strain from the civil war in Syria, which has drawn in Shi'ite and Sunni fighters from Iraq and beyond to fight against each other.

Nearly 600 people have been killed in militant attacks across Iraq so far this month, according to violence monitoring group Iraq Body Count.

That is still well below the height of bloodletting in 2006-07, when the monthly death toll sometimes exceeded 3,000.

Death toll at 89 after central Chinese earthquake; thousands of homes lost

China Daily via Reuters

A man gives water to an injured woman after an earthquake hit Minxian county in China's Gansu province Monday.

By M. Alex Johnson, Staff Writer, NBC News

The death toll has risen to 89, with more than 700 people injured and five others still missing, in the wake of a major earthquake in central China, state media said Tuesday.

The quake hit in Gansu province about 8 miles east of Chabu at 7:45 a.m. Monday Beijing time (7:45 p.m. ET Sunday), according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Although Chinese authorities described it as a 6.6-magnitude quake, the USGS recorded it at magnitude 5.9. It said the quake caused severe shaking in a rural region where the infrastructure isn't seismically resistant.

Most of the casualties were in Minxian county, where 87 people were killed and 515 were injured, 60 of them seriously, the official Chinese news agency Xinhua said. The five missing people were also from Minxiang, it said.

Gansu authorities said at a news conference Monday night in Lanzhou, the provincial capital, that 422 aftershocks were recorded in the following hours. More than 1,200 homes were destroyed, and 21,000 others were heavily damaged, they said,

Thousands of police, firefighters, local militiamen and government officials poured into the region to help with rescue efforts, Xinhua said.

An 6.6-earthquake has killed at least 75 people, according to China's state news agency.

Relief efforts have been severely hampered by days of heavy rain that have caused flash floods leading to landslides, the Central Meteorological Administration said. One of them, in the Meichuan Township village of Yongguang, buried 12 residents, the local government said.

Chu Xiaoyi, 20, said the landslide destroyed his house, according to Xinhua. He said he and his family narrowly escaped by holding on to a utility pole.

"We were sleeping when it happened, so we ran out almost naked," the news agency quoted him as saying. "Now we have nothing left, and even our clothes are borrowed from neighbors."

In the village of Yongxing, "nearly half of the hillside collapsed," burying much of the town, Lyu Ziqiang, a spokesman for the Lanzhou Military Command, told the Beijing-based China Daily newspaper.?

"The village had had continuous rain in past days, making the soil very swampy, so the quake caused the hillside to collapse easily," Lyu said. Water and electricity in the village were still cut off, he said.

Bing Maps

Xinhua said the quake was felt in the neighboring cities of Dingxi, Longnan and Tianshui, as well as Lanzhou, more than 100 miles away. About 19,000 people live in the area that was subject to the strongest shaking, it said.

The quake was followed an hour and a half later by a 5.6-magnitude aftershock at about the same depth,?the USGS reported.

Gansu abuts Sichuan province, where a 6.6-magnitude earthquake in April killed 164 people and injured more than 6,700 others. It was China's worst quake in three years.

This Robotic Crab Will Scuttle the Sea for Historic Sunken Treasures

This Robotic Crab Will Scuttle the Sea for Historic Sunken TreasuresOne problem with conventional ROVs is that while their propellers are plenty strong enough to kick up columns of silt from the sea floor, they typically lack the power to effectively navigate in strong currents, which limits where and how well they can survey a given area. But this new underwater explorer sidesteps both of these problems by skittering around the sea floor like a crab.

Japan wins rights to explore for rare metals in Pacific

TOKYO: Japan on Saturday said it had won the rights to explore for cobalt-rich crusts in the Pacific, a move that could reduce its dependence on China for rare metals.

A government press release said the International Seabed Authority (ISA) had approved Japan's plan to probe a 3,000-square-kilometre area beneath international waters off the isolated Japanese coral atoll of Minamitorishima.

The area is located 600 kilometres (375 miles) off the atoll which lies 1,850 kilometres south of Tokyo.

The Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation, acting on the government's behalf, is due to sign a formal contract with the ISA covering 15 years of exploration rights, the statement said.

Cobalt-rich crusts are presumed to cover the seabed between 1,000 and 2,000 metres down, containing such rare metals as manganese, cobalt, nickel and platinum, according to the statement.

Resources-poor Japan needs the metals for its high-tech components, including lithium-ion batteries and automobile engines.

China, the world's leading supplier of rare metals and rare earths, has used its position as diplomatic leverage at a time when it is locked in a row with Japan over Tokyo-controlled islands in the East China Sea.

In 2010, China restricted rare-earth exports when Japan arrested the captain of a Chinese trawler that was involved in a run-in with two Japanese coastguard cutters trying to coax it away from the disputed Senkaku Islands, claimed by China which calls them Diaoyu.

Economy, trade and industry minister Toshimitsu Motegi said the initial approval of the exploration plan is "extremely significant as it can enhance the possibility of Japan's resources development".

Japan last obtained exclusive rights to explore the seabed for minerals under international waters in 1987, for manganese nodules in an area southeast of Hawaii, the statement said.

But with the nodules scattered at least 4,000 metres below sea level, development has yet to begin, the business daily Nikkei said.

The ISA was established by the UN Law of the Sea Convention to organise and control all mineral-related activities beneath international waters.

Woman Dies After Falling Of ?Texas Giant? Roller Coaster At Six Flags

Woman Dies After Falling Of 'Texas Giant' Roller Coaster At Six Flags

ARLINGTON, TEXAS., ? What was supposed to be an evening of fun turned into a night of tragedy when a woman fell out from a popular roller coaster ride and died.

Six Flags Over Arlington took to their Facebook page to express their thoughts on the tragedy:

?We are deeply saddened to share that earlier this evening an adult woman died in the park while on the Texas Giant. Park medical staff and local paramedics responded immediately. Since the safety of our guests and employees is our number one priority, that section of the park has been temporarily closed. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends during this difficult time.?

Little is currently known as to what caused the woman to fall out of the roller coaster. A witness said that during the decline of the roller coaster, the safety bar seemed to release and the woman cam tumbling out.

The Texas Giant reaches 14 stories high and has a drop of 79 degrees and a bank of 95 degrees. It can carry up to 24 riders. The ride first opened in 1990 as an all-wooden coaster but underwent a $10 million renovation in 2010 to install steel-hybrid rails before reopening in 2011.

Across US, people rally for 'Justice for Trayvon'

ATLANTA (AP) ? One week after a jury found George Zimmerman not guilty in the death of unarmed teen Trayvon Martin, people began to gather for nationwide rallies to press for federal civil rights charges against the former neighborhood watch leader.

The Florida case has become a flashpoint in separate but converging national debates over self-defense laws, guns, and race relations. Zimmerman, who successfully claimed self-defense, identifies as Hispanic. Martin was black.

The Rev. Al Sharpton's National Action Network organized the "Justice for Trayvon" rallies and vigils outside federal buildings in at least 101 cities: from New York and Los Angeles to Wichita, Kan., and Atlanta, where people stood in the rain at the base of the federal courthouse, with traffic blocked on surrounding downtown streets.

Most rallies were scheduled for noon local times. Hundreds of people ? including music superstars Jay-Z and Beyonce, as well as Martin's mother, Sybrina Fulton ? gathered in New York.

Fulton told the crowd she was determined to fight for societal and legal changes needed to ensure that black youths are no longer viewed with suspicion because of their skin color.

"I promise you I'm going to work for your children as well," she said to the rally crowd.

At a morning appearance at Sharpton's headquarters in Harlem, she implored people to understand that the tragedy involved more than Martin alone. "Today it was my son. Tomorrow it might be yours," she said.

In addition to pushing the Justice Department to investigate civil rights charges against Zimmerman, Sharpton told supporters he wants to see a rollback of stand-your-ground self-defense laws.

"We are trying to change laws so that this never, ever happens again," Sharpton said.

Stand-your-ground laws are on the books in more than 20 states, and they go beyond many older, traditional self-defense statutes. In general, the laws eliminate a person's duty to retreat in the face of a serious physical threat.

Zimmerman did not invoke Florida's stand-your-ground law, instead relying on a traditional self-defense argument. Nor was race discussed in front of the jury that acquitted Zimmerman. But the two topics have dominated public discourse about the case, and came up throughout Saturday's rallies.

In Indianapolis, the Rev. Jeffrey Johnson told about 200 attendees that the nationwide effort is about making life safer for young black men. Johnson said young black men still are endangered by racial profiling.

Part of Sharpton's comments echoed those made by President Barack Obama on the case yesterday. "Racial profiling is not as bad as segregation, but you don't know the humiliation of being followed in a department store," Sharpton said.

Attorney General Eric Holder announced this week that his department would investigate whether Zimmerman could be charged under federal civil rights laws. Such a case would require evidence that Zimmerman harbored racial animosity against Martin. Most legal experts say that would be a difficult charge to bring.

Holder said the shooting demonstrates the need to re-examine stand-your-ground laws.

Cowboys Lineman Josh Brent Retires From Football

Dallas Cowboys defensive lineman Josh Brent announced his retirement this week right before the start of training camp.

Brent, 25, is facing charges of intoxication manslaughter in a December 8 one-car accident in his Mercedes that killed passenger Jerry Brown, a Dallas Cowboys practice squad member. The trial on this charge is scheduled to begin in late September although plea bargain negotiations are reportedly underway. Brent?s blood alcohol level was reportedly 0.18 at the time of his arrest, more than twice the legal limit. He was recently in and out of a Dallas jail for a positive marijuana test which violated his probation agreement.

In a statement, the former University of Illinois star said he needed to reorient his priorities. ?This is the right decision for me, and something that I have given a lot of thought to. I am at a point where my main focus is all about getting the priorities in my life in order.?

Brent, who was still being carried on the NFL team?s roster, could face up to 20 years behind bars if convicted on the intoxication manslaughter charge.

If or when he resolves his legal issues, Brent might be still young enough to attempt an NFL comeback. By retiring now, he also avoids any disciplinary action that the league might have imposed as a result of the December fatal car accident. Drafted in the 2010 NFL supplement draft, He appeared in 39 games for Dallas (five starts) with 31 tackles, 1.5 sacks, and one forced fumble.

According to Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, ?[Josh Brent] wants to concentrate on where he should be concentrating on in his life. This allows him, in my mind, to do that? He?s certainly got the ability to play. Let?s focus on where it?s got to be focused, and that?s him getting his life in order, off the field and this is what this does. He wants to.?

IT?S HIGH TIME TO DISMANTLE AND DEFUND THE PRESIDENT?S HEALTHCARE LAW

Washington, D.C. ? The House of Representatives brought two pieces of legislation that would implement a one-year delay in the employer and individual mandate -- two pillars of the President?s healthcare law. Congressman Randy Weber (R-Friendswood) made the following statement:

?I have been a strong opponent of this healthcare law since its inception. The government has no business controlling the healthcare system.

Former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi said, "We have to pass the bill to find out what is in it." Well folks, we've found out and even the President and his Administration can no longer deny the fact that this law is fatally flawed.

The Fairness for American Families Act and the Authority for Mandate Delay Act are steps in the right direction toward protecting Americans from the President?s unworkable mandates. However, it is still imperative that we work toward dismantling and defunding this disastrous law completely. I will continue to work with my colleagues to spur economic growth, create new jobs, and provide a more secure future for all Americans.?

The employer mandate requires businesses with 50 or more employees to provide health insurance or face an annual fine ranging from $2,000 to $44,000 per year. The individual mandate requires everyone to provide proof of health insurance or else face an annual penalty of $95 or 1 percent of household income. In 2016, the individual mandate penalty will rise to $695 or 2.5 percent of household income.

NASA still perplexed by astronaut's flooded helmet

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) ? The spacewalking astronaut who came close to drowning in a flooded helmet searched for clues in his spacesuit Wednesday, in hopes of understanding the unprecedented water leak.

Engineers in Houston, meanwhile, conducted their own investigation into what should have been a routine, yet still risky, maintenance job outside the International Space Station.

But a day after one of NASA's most harrowing spacewalks in decades, answers eluded the experts.

"There still is no smoking gun or definite cause of what happened or why that water ended up" inside Luca Parmitano's spacesuit, said NASA spokesman Kelly Humphries.

Parmitano, Italy's first and only spacewalker, could not hear or speak by the time he re-entered the space station on Tuesday, 1? hours after stepping out. He also had difficulty seeing because of the big globs of water in his helmet and elsewhere in his suit.

He'd worn the same suit on a spacewalk a week earlier, without mishap.

NASA aborted the second spacewalk because of the deluge and later acknowledged it was a serious situation in which Parmitano could have choked or even drowned. He looked all right, although wet, when his crewmates pulled off his helmet, and was reported to be in fine shape.

"Back to normality on the ISS - Cupola is still a fantastic sight, even after a (very short) EVA," Parmitano wrote Wednesday in a tweet. EVA is NASA shorthand for spacewalk: extravehicular activity. He followed with photos of Italy's Lake Como, the Italian Alps and the Rimini sea resort that he snapped from the station's cupola, or observation deck.

NASA astronaut Karen Nyberg, a crewmate, added via Twitter: "Just happy Luca's safe!"

On Wednesday, Parmitano shined a long flashlight through the ring collar of his suit, while his colleague, American Christopher Cassidy, examined other equipment used Tuesday.

Nothing suspicious popped up, Humphries said.

There are only two sources of water in the suit: a 32-ounce drink bag and a 1-gallon cooling system embedded in long underwear.

NASA has pretty much ruled out the drink pouch. That leaves the cooling system. Specialists detected a higher than normal usage of water from the system's tanks, which could be consistent with Tuesday's leakage, Humphries said.

"No real theory yet on exactly where this water came from or why, but they are doing a very deliberate step by step process of troubleshooting to try to identify what's going on," he said.

Tuesday's close call points out the ever-present dangers of spacewalking, Mission Control managers acknowledged to reporters following the episode.

The next NASA astronaut set to fly to the space station, Michael Hopkins, said the important thing is that the spacewalkers got back in safe, thanks to everyone's quick, appropriate reactions. While "certainly concerned" by Tuesday's events, he said he's confident the mystery will be solved before NASA sends anyone else out the hatch.

"We still don't know what happened, and so in terms of how that's going to impact our flight, we still don't know," Hopkins told reporters. But he added: "We're ready for whatever might get thrown our way."

NASA plans no spacewalks during Hopkins' half-year mission, scheduled to begin in September. Hopkins' two Russian crewmates, on the other hand, are aiming for seven spacewalks before and after December's launch of a new Russian lab.

Russian spacesuits are entirely different than their American counterparts.

Barring an emergency, no further NASA spacewalks are planned anytime soon. The work left undone Tuesday involved a variety of minor chores that had piled up over the past couple of years. Officials said there's no hurry to finish the job.

Spare U.S. spacesuits are on board and could be used in an emergency. The leak problem appears to be limited to Parmitano's suit since Cassidy's outfit worked fine, Humphries said.

Parmitano, 36, a major in the Italian Air Force and a former test pilot, arrived at the space station at the end of May. NASA praised his calm, cool demeanor during Tuesday's crisis. He's supposed to remain aboard the orbiting outpost until November.

Preliminary report into Dreamliner fire may come this week - AAIB

LONDON (Reuters) - A preliminary report into the fire that broke out aboard one of Boeing's 787 Dreamliner jets last Friday could be released this week, the Air Accident Investigation Branch (AAIB) said on Thursday.

"It could be that there's what's called a preliminary report which gives the most urgent safety recommendations, that could be fairly soon ... It could be this week," an AAIB spokeswoman told Reuters.

The AAIB is leading the investigation into a blaze that broke out on a parked Ethiopian Airlines jet last week.

Investigators have been looking at several components, including a lithium manganese battery in the Honeywell emergency locator transmitter (ELT), as possible causes.

More Local Educators Dump Big-Union Membership

July 16 2013

Vicki E. Alger

The Education Intelligence Agency?s Mike Antonucci reports that earlier this month the country?s largest teachers union, the National Education Association (NEA), struggled to ?put a happy face on some sad numbers.?

At the NEA National Convention, secretary-treasurer Becky Pringle cooed about not losing as many members as projected last year. ?So give yourselves a round of applause!? But Antonucci reports that the hard numbers tell a different story:

A visit to teachers? unions? web sites will tell you that NEA has 3 million members and AFT [American Federation of Teachers] 1.5 million. But they don?t have 4.5 million members between them. More than 600,000 belong to both unions, but they don?t pay double dues. NEA has 256,000 retiree members, who are important as advocates but provide only 1 percent of the budget. Ditto for the 62,000 student members, who add less than $1 million. NEA has 47,000 life members, who paid a single fee back in the old days and now contribute no money.

The life blood of NEA is employed, full-time teachers, professionals and support personnel. For the school year 2013-14, NEA now projects the number of those folks, full-time equivalent, will be just barely over 2 million, less than 1.7 million of them teachers.

?We lost members this year. We will continue to lose members next year,? said Pringle, adding, ?We are worried, most especially about our large affiliates.?

But losing smaller affiliates adds up, too. As the Heartland Institute?s School Reform News reports:

Teachers in tiny Deerfield, Kansas voted to remove themselves from the Kansas National Education Association and the National Education Association, the nation?s largest teachers union. Instead, they joined a local-only teacher association in June.

In 2012-2013, KNEA and NEA dues were nearly $600, an amount teachers were no longer willing to pay, said Joel McClure, a lead negotiator for the Deerfield teachers.

?The more information teachers have about alternatives, truly professional alternatives, they aren?t wanting to give their money to KNEA or NEA,? McClure said.

Smaller associations of professional educators are increasingly taking on teachers union establishments in the states and nationwide. While NEA reps may say they?re really only concerned about their big fish affiliates, their smaller fish local unions are ?the power base of the entire union movement,? according to Stanford University?s Terry Moe, because teachers are more connected to their local colleagues rather than far-removed union leaders who do not necessarily share their political views.

Moe cautions that isolated local defections may not make a full-scale movement, but it is worth noting that local?voluntary?unions are increasingly realizing that they can provided all the benefits that their members need without all the costly partisan politics they don?t.

US factories increase output in June for 2nd month

(AP) ? U.S. factories cranked out more business equipment, home electronics and autos last month, boosting manufacturing output for the second straight month.

The Federal Reserve said Tuesday that manufacturing production rose 0.3 percent in June from May. That followed a 0.2 percent gain the previous month. Still, the two months of gains barely offset drops in March and April.

Overall industrial production, which includes factories, mines and utilities, also rose 0.3 percent in June. Mining output increased 0.8 percent, and utility output slid 0.1 percent.

The gains in manufacturing, the most critical component of industrial production, are a hopeful sign that factories could rebound in the second half of the year.

Manufacturers have struggled this year, providing little support to the economy. Their output is up just 1.8 percent over the past 12 months. And factories have cut jobs in each of the past four months, shedding a total of 24,000 since February.

A key reason for the weakness is slower global growth has cut demand for U.S. exports. Europe is still in a recession and China's economy grew from April through June at the slowest pace in more than two decades.

Manufacturing has shown improvement in Britain, France and Italy. Large Japanese manufacturers are also sounding optimistic for the first time in nearly two years.

There have been other positive signs that suggest U.S. factory production could increase in the second half of the year.

The Institute for Supply Management said that factory activity improved in June after hitting its lowest level in four years. But the closely watched manufacturing survey reported that employment fell to its lowest level since September 2009.

Factory activity in the New York region grew for the second straight month in July, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York's Empire State manufacturing survey.

U.S. businesses reported a strong 1.1 percent increase in sales in May, the Commerce Department reported. Those same firms only increased their stockpiles slightly, suggesting they will need to order more goods to keep up with demand.

And Americans bought more cars and trucks, furniture and clothes in June, according to a separate Commerce report on retail spending. But consumers cut back almost everywhere else, and overall retail sales rose just 0.4 percent last month from May.

Vigils set in 100 cities over Zimmerman verdict

NEW YORK (AP) ? Thousands of demonstrators from across the country ? chanting, praying and fighting tears ? protested a jury's decision to clear neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman in the shooting death of an unarmed black teenager, and organizers say they'll try to maintain the momentum with vigils next weekend.

Rallies on Sunday were largely peaceful as demonstrators voiced their support for 17-year-old Trayvon Martin's family and decried the verdict. Police in Los Angeles said they arrested six people, mostly for failure to disperse, after about 80 protesters gathered in Hollywood on Sunset Boulevard and an unlawful assembly was declared. New York police said at least a dozen people were arrested on disorderly conduct charges during a rally in Times Square.

Advocates want federal civil rights charges against Zimmerman, who was acquitted Saturday in Martin's 2012 shooting death. The Rev. Al Sharpton said Monday that his organization will hold vigils and rallies in 100 cities Saturday in front of federal buildings.

The Justice Department has said it's considering whether federal prosecutors should file criminal civil rights charges now that Zimmerman has been acquitted in the state case. The department opened an investigation into Martin's death last year but stepped aside to allow the state prosecution to proceed.

Sunday's demonstrations, held in cities from Florida to Wisconsin, attracted anywhere from a few dozen people to a more than a thousand.

At a march and rally in downtown Chicago attended by about 200 people, 73-year-old Maya Miller said the case reminded her of the 1955 slaying of Emmitt Till, a 14-year-old from Chicago who was murdered by a group of white men while visiting Mississippi. Till's killing galvanized the civil rights movement.

"Fifty-eight years and nothing's changed," Miller said, pausing to join a chant for "Justice for Trayvon, not one more."

In New York City, more than 1,000 people marched into Times Square on Sunday night, zigzagging through Manhattan's streets to avoid police lines. Sign-carrying marchers thronged the busy intersection, chanting "Justice for! Trayvon Martin!" as they made their way from downtown Union Square, blocking traffic for more than an hour.

In San Francisco and in Los Angeles, where police dispersed an earlier protest with beanbag rounds, police closed streets Sunday.

President Barack Obama, Sharpton and the Rev. Jesse Jackson have urged calm. In Oakland, Calif., during protests that began late Saturday night, some angry demonstrators broke windows, burned U.S. flags, vandalized a police squad car and spray-painted anti-police graffiti.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti urged protesters to "practice peace" after rock- and bottle-throwing. Later, more than 100 officers in riot gear converged and ordered people to disperse. A handful of people were given citations, mostly for blocking a street or jaywalking

Rand Powdrill, 41, of San Leandro, Calif., said he marched in San Francisco with about 400 others to "protest the execution of an innocent black teenager."

"If our voices can't be heard, then this is just going to keep going on," he said.

Earlier, at Manhattan's Middle Collegiate Church, many congregants wore hooded sweatshirts similar to the one Martin was wearing the night he was shot. Hoodie-clad Jessica Nacinovich said she could only feel disappointment and sadness over the verdict.

"I'm sure jurors did what they felt was right in accordance with the law but maybe the law is wrong, maybe society is wrong; there's a lot that needs fixing," she said.

At a service in Sanford, Fla., where Zimmerman was tried, teens wearing shirts with Martin's picture wiped away tears during a church sermon.

Protesters also gathered in Atlanta, Miami, Milwaukee, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., along with a host of other cities.

In Miami, more than 200 people gathered. "You can't justify murder," read one poster. Another read "Don't worry about more riots. Worry about more Zimmermans."

Carol Reitner, 76, of Miami, said she heard about the vigil through an announcement at her church Sunday morning. "I was really devastated. It's really hard to believe that someone can take the life of someone else and walk out of court free," she said.

In Philadelphia, about 700 protesters marched through downtown to the Liberty Bell, alternating between chanting Trayvon Martin's name and "No justice, no peace!"

"We hope this will begin a movement to end discrimination against young black men," said Johnathan Cooper, one of the protest's organizers. "And also to empower black people and get them involved in the system."

In Atlanta, about 75 protesters chanted and carried signs near Centennial Olympic Park.

"I came out today because a great deal of injustice has been done and I'm very disappointed at our justice system," said Tabatha Holley, 19, of Atlanta.

"I'm just disappointed in America."

Red Hot Dating App Tinder Officially Arrives On Android, Begins Hooking Up With Big Media

The Digital Dating World has seen its fair share of companies come and go over the years, and few have been able to give the usual suspects, like eHarmony, Match.com and OkCupid, a run for their respective monies. However, since bursting onto the scene in October of last year, Tinder has been making a play to become the next digital dating giant by focusing on an area where few (if any) of its predecessors have excelled: Your phone.

Drawing on the same addictive formula behind Hot or Not, Tinder allows those in search of a date (or a little casual flirting) to swipe through Facebook-powered profiles of prospective matches, accepting or rejecting based on visual appeal. Sure, it?s a bit superficial, but its game-ified approach to flirting is also more than a little addicting and has taken off among the SnapChat generation, beginning with college campuses.

In fact, since launching in October, Tinder has spread like wildfire ? a fact that, as we reported in May, has had investors and potential acquirers drooling. Today, Tinder co-founder and CEO Sean Rad tells us, users have rated over seven billion profiles, and the app has served over 100 million matches in all (and is currently adding 1.5 million matches/day and growing, he says.)

Android

Yet, for a mobile-first startup, Tinder has been missing a huge piece of the smartphone puzzle: To date, the app has only been available on the iPhone. Beginning today, however, with the arrival of Tinder for Android, the popular mobile dating app is going multi-platform, opening its doors to users of the mobile operating system that now owns over 70 percent of smartphone marketshare.

In the lead-up to the app?s arrival on Google Play, the Tinder founders decided to take a somewhat unusual approach to drumming up attention for its new app ? another testament to how popular the app has become.

Instead of simply launching the app on the app store as is normally the case, several weeks ago, the company created a landing page for the new app, saying that they would only make Tinder for Android available once they had received one million requests (via social media). They haven?t quite made it to one million requests, Rad says, but with over 800K already logged, the founders decided to pull the trigger anyway.

Screen shot 2013-07-15 at 2.52.42 PMIn its port from iOS to Android, fans of the mobile dating network will be pleased to learn that there haven?t been many changes to the overall user experience, other than some requisite optimizations for its new operating system. It?s still the same model: Once a user signs in, they?re shown snapshots of local singles based on location and mutual interests. They can ?like? or pass each match as it appears and can decide to chat or meet up only when both users show interest (i.e. ?like? each other).

It?s this simple model, which encourages people to make snap judgements of each other based on a few photos and some basic profile information on mutual preferences, interests and friends, that have led Tinder users to make over 7 billion profile ratings. For those looking for long-term, serious romance, the eHarmony and OKCupid approach is likely to have more appeal, but for younger users interested in a quick way to meet people and a casual way to flirt, Tinder has (thus far) been taking the cake.

As we wrote earlier this summer, based on its surging popularity among young people, rumors had been circulating for months that the company has been in the process of raising a huge round of outside financing or was busy looking for a big-figure exit. Today, both of these remain untrue and, while the startup is still not sharing how much capital it has in its coffers, IAC is (and remains) its primary investor and stakeholder.

For those unfamiliar, part of the reason Tinder has been able to do what it has over the last six months is that it?s been able to learn first-hand from the giants of Digital Dating. The startup was incubated at Hatch Labs, a new Los Angeles-based startup and accelerator backed by the aforementioned IAC ? the same Barry Diller-led digital media giant that happens to own dating veterans Match.com and OKCupid. As a result, IAC maintains ?first-dibs? rights to investing Tinder and has been the ?sole investor in its seed and series A rounds,? which we?ve heard total in the millions (and likely more than a few ?millions?), we wrote at the time.

Think Local, Flirt Global

With enough runway and plenty of interest, Tinder has also begun to focus on international markets, as the CEO told us at the time that over 15 percent of its users now hail from outside the U.S. Going forward, the startup has begun focusing its international efforts on the UK, Canada, Australia, Latin America (particularly Brazil and Mexico), Germany, France and Japan and is in the process of adding further language support, localization and is hiring local reps in each of these countries.

Rad also told us in May that Asia remains a potentially big opportunity for Tinder, thanks to ?the explosion of mobile adoption.? To be sure, whether it?s Asia as or in other target global markets, the launch of Tinder for Android will be a key to unlocking continued growth in these regions. As Ingrid recently wrote, Google?s global share of smartphone sales was 64 percent in March and, with Android?s ?share rising in every market over the last few months,? it will be approaching 70 percent soon.

Screen shot 2013-07-15 at 1.08.40 PMSince the beginning, the Tinder founders have been hesitant to refer to their product as a ?dating app,? as their long-term plans involve expanding the growing network beyond dating. With the stigmas that have traditionally come with ?Internet dating,? this isn?t particularly surprising. No one is eager to be painted with the ?superficial dating app? brush, even if in this case, the glove certainly fits.

Beyond Dating

However, the company has been making its first steps toward expanding the Tinder experience beyond dating, launching a new feature called ?Matchmaker,? which enables users to create matches between any two Facebook friends for any purpose ? flirting or otherwise. As we wrote in May, the idea behind the new networking tool is to create a ?casual, simple way to make an introduction, whether you want to set two friends up on a date or make a professional introduction or connection,? while maintaining the anonymity of the typical Tinder experience.

But, as a decidedly free app, the Tinder team has been experimenting with ways to allow big brands to connect with its droves of young users ? a coveted demographic for many advertisers ? and with ways to monetize. While Rad tells us that its newest promotional deal does not in fact represent its current or future efforts to monetize, it does indicate potential roads the company could take to ramping up revenue generation.

Tinder And Big Media

Screen shot 2013-07-15 at 2.37.40 PMAs Variety and others have reported, the first brand (and TV network) to hook up with Tinder is USA, which launched a promo last night that?s targeted at younger generations ahead of the Season 3 premiere of its popular show, ?Suits.? The Tinder CEO tells us that the company has had similar interest from a number of TV networks and brands, but they opted to go with USA and Suits because the network?s vision was the most closely aligned with their own ? and because Rad himself is a fan of the show.

On the flip side, dudes under the age of 35 have traditionally been difficult to advertise to, and USA thinks that its promo with Tinder could help introduce its show to an audience it ? and many other networks ? are always trying to reach. As to the promo itself, beginning last night, when Tinder users sign in to the app, they may find that one of the matches waiting for them is actually a character from ?Suits.?

When and if a user ?likes? one of the characters, they?ll be given access to ?exclusive content? from the show, which basically means sneak peeks, audio greetings and clips only available on the Tinder network. The characters from the show will also be choosing a few power users to ?like? back to engage in a little live flirting over chat and, depending on how things go, maybe even live, in person. It remains to be seen whether or not this will appeal to Tinder users or just be a nuisance, but even though both parties were firm on the fact that no money exchanged hands as a result of the partnership, users can expect more of these types of promos within Tinder going forward.

Rad says that he and the team are focused intently on keeping Tinder ad-free, so, while its partnership with USA may not currently be resulting in any revenue for the startup, one can imagine Tinder pursuing similar strategies when it does decide to flip the ?revenue switch.?

Sure, few Tinder users are probably champing at the bit to see their favorite mobile dating app begin to monetize, but, at at time when even the former ?Miss America? is discovered to be using Tinder, the company would remiss not to take advantage of its 10 minutes. Especially before users discover that the hot date they?ve been falling in love with is actually just a spambot.

Tinder on Google Play here.

Tinder finds out who likes you nearby, and connects you with them if you?re also interested. It all started with the realization that there are many apps that connect us with people we already know, but none that do a great job of helping us meet new people. The whole Tinder experience is designed to be familiar and emulate the way we interact in real life?digitally reproduced, enhanced, and made mobile.

NY teacher arraigned on sex charges on wedding day

OSSINING (AP) - An upstate New York math teacher was supposed to be getting married on Friday - but instead was charged with raping a 16-year-old female student.

The Journal News reports ( http://lohud.us/17bhmfJ ) that Ossining High School teacher John Azabache was arrested after the girl contacted police. She said they had sexual relations twice between March and July, not on school property. It's not clear if she was his student.

The attorney for the 31-year-old teacher says his client was not charged with any forcible compulsion. He says the alleged incident involves a minor who is "just under 17."

Azabache pleaded not guilty to third-degree rape. He was barred from school grounds pending the outcome of the case.

Azabache was supposed to be married to a White Plains woman on Friday.
