Alternative Fuel Vehicles In Aurora Illinois - Sterling Automotive Repair

Let?s talk about alternative fuel vehicles. In their quest to reduce the use of fossil fuels and harmful exhaust emissions to our Aurora environment, automakers will have a number of alternatives for us very soon.

For instance, Flex Fuel vehicles are already available in the Naperville area. Flex Fuel vehicles can run on gasoline or on E85 fuel. E85 is a mixture of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline. The ethanol is made from corn.

The benefits are in using less petroleum and reduced pollution. The drawbacks are that E85 gets lower fuel economy and that when gas prices are low, E85 can be more expensive than straight gasoline.

You should only use E85 if you have a Flex Fuel compatible engine. Flex Fuel vehicles have special seals and gaskets that can stand up to the high alcohol content of E85. Using E85 in a regular engine can lead to gas leaks and fires.

Diesel engines have been around the Naperville area for a long, long time. Modern diesels are very refined and fuel efficient. Diesel fuel can be made from renewable sources like vegetable oil, too. Diesel fuel from algae and sunlight is reported to be pretty close to being commercially viable.

There are also a number of natural gas vehicles on our Naperville roads. Gasoline engines are adapted to run on compressed natural gas. It?s less expensive than gasoline and burns very cleanly. You can even refill it with a special pump from your gas line at home.

Natural gas engines don?t make as much power and don?t get as good of mileage, but they cost less per mile to run. The big inconvenience is that the tank that holds the compressed natural gas takes up a lot of room; even your whole trunk! And there may not be places to refuel on a road trip from Naperville.

Plug-in electric vehicles are now available in our Naperville area. Battery technology is the limiting factor right now. Electric cars have a limited range and are really best for use close to home. As battery technology advances, electric cars will perform closer and closer to conventional power plants.

That brings us to hybrids. There are a bunch of hybrids on our Naperville roads, with more to come. Hybrid technology combines internal combustion engines with electric motors.

A mild hybrid has a regular gas or diesel engine that?s assisted by the electric motor. The electric motor can propel the vehicle by itself up to a certain speed under gentle acceleration. There are mild hybrids in full-sized pickups and SUVs. They deliver city fuel economy similar to their highway ratings.

A full hybrid will rely primarily on the electric motor for power. It?ll have a small gas or diesel engine that generates electricity for the batteries.

Another breakthrough technology is hydrogen fuel cells. Fuel cell vehicles use hydrogen to generate electricity. Several global car makers have prototypes on the road. The appeal is that the only thing that comes out of the tail pipe is water vapor. It?ll take some time to build a national infrastructure of hydrogen fueling stations before there?s widespread use.

A quick word about safety around hybrid and electric vehicles. Unlike the battery in your current family car, these carry enough voltage to kill you. Never mess around under the hood or with the batteries or electrical wiring. Your Naperville service technician at Sterling Automotive Repair is trained to safely disable the flow of electricity before performing maintenance or repairs on the vehicle.

Hybrids are really not do-it-yourself vehicles unless you?re specifically trained on hybrid systems.

(AP) ? A Louisiana-shot film that took top honors at this year's Sundance Film Festival returned to the state where it was made for a Hollywood-style, red-carpet premiere Monday night before opening in select theaters nationwide this summer.

The makers and stars of "Beasts of the Southern Wild" ? all newcomers to the big screen ? walked a red carpet at the Joy Theater on streetcar-lined Canal Street, hailing the New Orleans premiere as a long-awaited homecoming after media screenings across the country and at the Cannes Film Festival in France in May.

"This is what we dreamed about the whole time we were filming, bringing a finished film back to Louisiana," said the film's director and co-writer, Benh Zeitlin, a native New Yorker and one of only a handful affiliated with the film not from the Bayou State. "Coming back and seeing all this in New Orleans, now it feels real."

Zeitlin and company have been on a whirlwind tour promoting "Beasts," which stars Louisiana natives and uses the state's marshes and bayous to tell the mythical tale of a 6-year-old girl named Hushpuppy struggling to survive in the southern Delta with her ailing father as a storm approaches. The motherless young girl's world consists of a small but tightly-knit shantytown community on the bayou with wild animals, both real and imagined.

"Beasts" won the grand jury prize in the U.S. dramatic competition at Sundance as well as its cinematography award. At Cannes, where many U.S. films were shut out, Louisiana's indie darling won the Camera d'Or for best first film by director Zeitlin.

After a months-long search for the young girl who would ultimately play Hushpuppy, Zeitlin and producers found Quvenzhane (Kuh-VAHN-zuh-nay) Wallis of Houma, La., who was 6 at the time the movie was filmed in 2010. Now 8, she walked the red carpet Monday evening in a bright blue dress with rosettes and a satin sash tied at the back. She wore glittery silver slippers, diamond earrings and a big smile as she talked to reporters and posed for pictures with the other stars.

Her hair straightened and bangs pulled in a tight braid above her forehead, Quvenzhane bore little resemblance to the pants-wearing bushy-haired wild child she portrayed in "Beasts."

Dwight Henry, a New Orleans bakery owner hand-picked for the role of Hushpuppy's father, Wink, wore a black tuxedo with a bright red vest. Like his pint-sized co-star, he was all smiles as he shook hands with colleagues, posed for pictures and waved at onlookers ? some who honked their horns from the street.

"We've been all over the country, but this is what it's all about, bringing it back home," Henry said. "This is the moment I've been wanting to share with my family."

The film's success has been a boon for Louisiana, which sees more film activity than just about any other state outside the entertainment hubs of California and New York. But few films that hail from Louisiana have garnered as much acclaim recently.

"We are all filled with an immense amount of pride," said Michael Gottwald, one of the film's producers.

The Fox Searchlight film opens in select theaters nationwide this summer, starting with showings in Los Angeles and New York on Friday and then New Orleans area theaters on July 4.

Judged for their ?natural ugliness in both pedigree and mutt classes,? Princess Abby, Handsome Hector, and Creature were not able to top the sheer unattractiveness of Mugly, with his short snout, beady eyes, and white whiskers.

Bev Nicholson, Mugly's owner who rescued him in the streets in the United Kingdom after the dog was abandoned by his family, told the Associated Press, "I couldn't speak when they announced Mugly's name."?

"I didn't know which way to look," she said. "I was shaking as much as the dog."

Mugly?s ugliness has long been recognized. In 2005, he was awarded the title of Britain?s ugliest dog. His looks do not, however, prevent him from holding down a job as a therapy dog for children.?

In addition to competing for international recognition, the British dog won a $1,000 prize and a year?s worth of dog cookies. He will also be invited for a photo shoot and a VIP stay at the local Sheraton.?

Last year?s winner at the Sonoma-Marin Fairgrounds, Yoda, was a Chinese crested and Chihuahua mix. Since the contest began in 2000, most of the winning dogs have been Chinese crested or Chinese crested and?Chihuahua mixes.?

(Dis)United States of Sleep: U.S.-Born Americans' Sleep Patterns Differ from Those of Immigrants

An ability to get the right amount of shut-eye each night differs depending on race, ethnicity and your birthplace

Sleep should be the great equalizer. Whatever differences might divide us during the day, the nonconsciousness that comes with nighttime should be one thing we all have in common.

It ain't necessarily so. Scientists have now found significant differences exist in how people sleep in the U.S. depending on race, ethnicity and country of origin, suggesting genetic or cultural differences in shut-eye patterns. This line of research could help identify how these disparities might affect health and find better ways to improve sleep.

One study looked at sleep data gathered from more than 430,000 people in the U.S. between 2004 and 2010 as part of the National Health Interview Surveys, which the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention conducts annually to monitor the country's well-being. They found that foreign-born respondents were generally more likely to sleep the recommended healthy six to eight hours each night as compared with native-born Americans.

"This study is particularly interesting, because it goes to show that the unhealthy American lifestyle includes more than a poor diet and lack of exercise?it also means unhealthy sleep patterns, and this can lead to important health consequences," says sleep researcher Michael Grandner at the University of Pennsylvania, who did not take part in this research. "It seems like foreign-born Americans may be protected by not adopting this unhealthy lifestyle."

Past research suggests that habitually sleeping less or more than the recommended six to eight hours for adults can be linked to certain higher health risks, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, stroke, cancer and accidents as well as instances of mental disorders such as depression. These findings regarding sleep disparities "can help us understand not only who to target for improving sleep with the aim of improving health, but it can help us identify the social and environmental influences on sleep, which might be modifiable," Grandner says. Unlike many other foreign-born persons, African-born Americans were more likely to report sleeping six hours or less, suggesting that helping them find more sleep could help them with other health issues, says the study's lead author Abhishek Pandey, a sleep researcher at the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center.

Another study analyzed 439 volunteers in the Chicago Area Sleep Study, a randomly selected, racially diverse sample of Chicago adults who donned wrist sensors that measured how long they slept each night for a week and answered surveys about sleep quality and daytime drowsiness. Researchers found that white participants on average slept about 30 minutes longer than other ethnic groups whereas blacks reported the worst sleep quality and Asians claimed to be the most sleepy during the day.

These disparities apparently represent normal experiences, and not underlying sleep disorders, says the study's lead author Mercedes Carnethon, an epidemiologist at Northwestern University. For instance, these differences persisted even after statistically adjusting for cardiovascular disease risk factors that researchers already know are linked with poor sleep, such as body mass index, high blood pressure and diabetes. The scientists also excluded people who had evidence of mild to moderate sleep apnea, a disorder that causes abnormal pauses in breathing during sleep.

"These studies show very clearly that when, how and how much you sleep is partially determined by who you are and where you come from," Grandner says. Pandey, Carnethon and their colleagues detailed their findings June 13 at the annual meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies in Boston.

Differences in sleep patterns might stem from genetic and anatomical variations between groups. For instance, past research suggests blacks and whites might sleep differently because of disparities in inflammation responses and that various groups might display distinctive the structure in their airways, influencing how they breathe during sleep, Pandey says.

Rasmus leads Blue Jays to sweep of Phillies

Associated Press Sports

updated 4:22 p.m. ET June 17, 2012

TORONTO (AP) -Frustration inside the Philadelphia Phillies clubhouse is mounting as the losses pile up.

Colby Rasmus hit a two-run homer, Brett Cecil won for the first time in almost a year and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Phillies 6-2 Sunday to complete a three-game sweep.

"It's not a good mood," outfielder Hunter Pence said of the feeling inside a quiet Phillies clubhouse. "When you don't win, it's not a good mood. It's horrible."

Jim Thome, who hit his 608th career home run, urged his teammates not to hang their heads.

"That's why it's a long year," Thome said. "You keep battling and you obviously don't want to go through the times we're going through. It can be frustrating because we have a very talented club."

Rasmus went 3 for 4 with three RBIs, scored twice and came within a triple of the cycle as the Blue Jays swept the Phillies for the second time in team history; they also swept a three-game series at Philadelphia in 2009.

Slumping Philadelphia, the last-place team in the NL East, lost for the 12th time in 15 games.

"We know what we have to do but getting it done is another thing," manager Charlie Manuel said. "We've just got to play better."

Right-hander Kyle Kendrick, who lost his third straight start, couldn't recall a similar stretch of struggles in his six seasons with the Phillies.

"Since I've been here, it hasn't been like this," Kendrick said. "We're all trying our best, trying to win games. Things aren't going our way right now."

Starting for the first time this season after being promoted from Triple-A Las Vegas last week, the left-handed Cecil (1-0) allowed two runs and five hits in five innings. He walked one and struck out five.

"My curveball has gotten a lot better, it's a lot tighter," Cecil said. "That, and being able to control the ball a lot better with all my pitches and throwing to both sides of the plate."

Cecil went 4-11 in 20 starts last season, then struggled with command and velocity this spring after losing more than 30 pounds in offseason conditioning. He was demoted to Double-A on the final day of spring training, one day after a rough outing against Detroit. He hadn't won since last July 29 against Texas.

"What we had hoped to see," Blue Jays manager John Farrell said. "He pitched with a lot more crispness than we last saw in spring training. He kept the game under control, he threw a lot of strikes and it was an encouraging outing for him."

Luis Perez worked three innings and Jason Frasor finished in the ninth for Toronto.

The Blue Jays jumped on Kendrick with two runs in the bottom of the first. Brett Lawrie and Rasmus opened the inning with back-to-back doubles and Jose Bautista walked but was picked off. Edwin Encarnacion struck out before Kelly Johnson grounded an RBI single up the middle.

Thome cut the lead in half when he led off the second with a home run to right, his fourth.

Thome's long ball was his 100th with Philadelphia, making him the fourth player in major league history to hit at least 100 home runs with three different teams (including Cleveland and Chicago). Darrel Evans (Atlanta, San Francisco and Detroit), Reggie Jackson (California, Oakland and New York) and Alex Rodriguez (Seattle, Texas and New York) are the others.

"It is special," Thome said. "You look at Philadelphia, you look at Chicago, you look at Cleveland, they're all great baseball cities. And to do that with the Phillies is special, no doubt. I think it's something to be proud of, you just wish you could have won the ballgame."

John Mayberry Jr. tied it with a homer to begin the third, his fifth and second in two days.

The Blue Jays reclaimed the lead in the fourth on a two-out RBI single by Rajai Davis, with Yunel Escobar scoring from second base.

Lawrie walked to begin the fifth and Rasmus followed with a booming home run into the second deck in right, his 10th.

"It was right on his swing path, down and in," Kendrick said, "A perfect ball for him to run into."

Kendrick (2-7) allowed six runs, five earned, and eight hits in 6 1-3 innings. He walked two and struck out four.

Philadelphia catcher Carlos Ruiz returned to the lineup, two days after leaving Friday's game after six innings with a strained muscle in his left side. Ruiz went 0 for 4 and struck out looking twice.

NOTES: Thome's homer was the 608th of his career, moving him one behind Sammy Sosa on the career list. ... The Blue Jays marked Father's Day by flying the fathers of 13 players to Toronto for the game. ... Attendance was 45,060, Toronto's biggest crowd since opening day. ... The Phillies are off Monday, while the Blue Jays begin a three-game series at Milwaukee. RHP Henderson Alvarez (3-6) faces LHP Randy Wolf (2-5) in the opener.

Nantsune meat slicer scans 3D shapes to get the perfect cut, bring home the bacon in record time video

Bacon, our old friend. We've missed you. Japan's Nantsune must have missed it too, as its new Libra 165C meat slicer is using some mighty advanced technology to cut pork quickly. Beating a Nikko creation to the punch by about a year, it uses a displacement sensor to scan the shape of a slab of meat and make cuts that are the exact same weight, regardless of their shape or thickness. By knowing as much as it does in advance, the Libra can cut as many as 6,000 slices every hour; they're not ready-made bacon slices, but they'll certainly get to those cuts much faster than earlier methods that only weighed in mid-chop. You might not want to get visions of setting up Nantsune's meat machine in the kitchen: it'll be ready by the end of June, but the $160,000 price could mean sacrificing a whole lot of other food to avoid breaking out the cleaver.

Police collect bodies in strife-torn Myanmar town

SITTWE, Myanmar (AP) ? With fearful residents cowering indoors, security forces patrolling a tense town in western Myanmar collected bodies Monday from the debris of homes burned down over the weekend in some of the country's deadliest sectarian bloodshed in years.

The Buddhist-Muslim violence, which has left at least seven people dead and hundreds of homes torched since Friday, poses one the biggest tests yet for Myanmar's new government as it struggles to reform the nation after generations of military rule. The handling of the unrest will draw close scrutiny from Western powers, which have praised President Thein Sein's administration in recent months and rewarded it by easing years of harsh economic sanctions.

Thein Sein declared a state of emergency in the region late Sunday and pleaded for an end to the "endless anarchic vengeance," warning that if the situation spun out of control, it could jeopardize the democratic reforms he has launched since taking office last year.

"We have not had any sleep for the last five days," said Ma Ohn May, a 42-year old textile shop owner in the coastal port of Sittwe, adding that residents were holed up and bracing for further ethnic clashes, though the area was calm Monday.

The United Nations said it had temporarily relocated 44 of its 150 personnel in Rakhine state. Local state television said cargo and passenger boats to Sittwe were suspended.

Violence between ethnic Rakhine Buddhists and members of a Muslim minority who call themselves Rohingyas erupted Friday in Rakhine state and spread Saturday to Sittwe.

The unrest ? trigged by the alleged rape and murder last month of a Buddhist girl by three Muslims and the June 3 lynching of 10 Muslims in retaliation ? stems from long-standing tensions in the region.

The region's Rohingya Muslims are seen by the government as illegal migrants from Bangladesh and are not officially recognized as one of the country's national ethnic minorities. Although some are recent settlers, many have lived in Myanmar for generations. The government position has rendered the Rohingyas effectively stateless, and rights groups say they have long suffered discrimination.

"It's a tinderbox," said Phil Robertson, the deputy Asia director for Human Rights Watch. "These people very much feel like they're trapped in a box, surrounded by enemies and there is an extremely high level of frustration."

The Rohingyas' plight gained international attention in 2010 when five boatloads of haggard migrants fleeing Myanmar were detained by Thai authorities and allegedly sent adrift at sea with little food and water. Hundreds were believed to have drowned.

There are an estimated 800,000 Rohingya living in Myanmar's mountainous Rakhine state, which borders Bangladesh. Thousands attempt to flee every year to Bangladesh, Malaysia and elsewhere in the region, trying to escape a life of abuse that rights groups say includes forced labor, violence against Rohingya women and restrictions on movement, marriage and reproduction that breed anger and resentment.

In Sittwe on Monday, shops, schools and banks were closed, including the city's main market and some ethnic Rakhines wielding homemade swords could be seen guarding their homes or riding motorcycles. An Associated Press photographer in the town saw many homes burned or ransacked in the city's Mi Zan district.

Police retrieved four corpses, including one found in a river that was believed to be that of an ethnic Rakhine woman. The other three bodies were wrapped in blankets, but it was not clear who they were.

Police evacuated two Muslim families from the same area for their security because their Muslim homes were located among houses of ethnic Rakhines, who are predominantly Buddhist.

Ma Ohn May, the shop owner in Sittwe, said she and her colleagues had heard rumors that Muslims were approaching the coastal market by boat to launch an attack. She said her Buddhist cousin, living in the Muslim-dominated town of Maungdaw, had taken refuge in the local police headquarters.

"Her house has been damaged and she is living in fear," Ma Ohn May said, adding that food and water were in short supply.

Thein Sein's state of emergency was his first since becoming president. The measure allows the military to take over administrative functions for Rakhine State, a coastal region that borders Bangladesh.

In a nine-minute speech televised nationally Sunday night, Thein Sein said that the violence was fanned by dissatisfaction harbored by different religious and ethnic groups, hatred and the desire for vengeance.

"If this endless anarchic vengeance and deadly acts continue, there is the danger of them spreading to other parts and being overwhelmed by subversive influences," he said. "If that happens, it can severely affect peace and tranquility and our nascent democratic reforms and the development of the country."

In contrast to the previous military regime, Thein Sein's government has been relatively open in releasing timely information about the recent trouble. Under the former ruling junta, such incidents usually went unreported or were referred to only in brief, cryptic fashion.

Thein Sein was elected with the backing of the military, but discarded many of its repressive policies to seek accommodation with the pro-democracy movement of Nobel peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi.

Children's Health & Fitness ? Educators Needed For Fight Against ...

June 11th, 2012 by Len Saunders

From the CEEP Report?..

The problem of childhood obesity is getting worse across the nation and Indiana, requiring direct action by schools, parents and governmental leaders, according to a new policy brief from the Center for Evaluation & Education Policy at Indiana University. The brief, ?Childhood Obesity and Nutrition Issues in the United States: an Update on School-Based Policies and Practices,? details the most recent statistics outlining what many health experts denote as a growing obesity ?epidemic.?

?All states are losing the fight,? said report co-author Terry Spradlin, director for education policy and the High School Survey of Student Engagement at CEEP. ?In fact, there was an initiative in 2000 that called for all states to have an obesity rate of 15 percent or less by 2010. Here we are at a 35 percent rate for the nation today. Roughly a third of our adult population is considered obese; for our childhood population nationwide, that obesity rate is roughly 17 percent.?

Indiana is among the most obese states for the adult population with the 15th highest percentage (up from 16th in 2009, according to the Trust for America?s Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation). Indiana?s percentage of overweight and obese children moved past four states since 2009 to 27th in the nation.

Google is Regaining Control of Android, Not Losing Control [Opinion]

There has been a lot of speculation surrounding Google?s purchase of Motorola and the rumor that Google will partner with five manufacturers for the Nexus project. There seem to be signs that things are changing around the way Google controls Android. Google needs the phone manufacturers and the carriers to ensure that handsets get into consumers? hands, but the tug of war between OS vendor, OEM, and carrier hasn?t been pretty.?

In the past I have argued that Google should block services from carrier branded Nexus devices to assert their control and that Google should use Motorola to control its own Android devices instead of relying on manufacturers to assert control over Android.?Some have argued that Google?s purchase of Motorola probably got other OEMs worried that Motorola would be favored, hence the new rumored Nexus deal to appease manufacturers. Dan Frommer argued that Google might offer three versions of Android: Nexus (stock, Google controlled), Motorola (Google hardware and software with special Motorola-only features from Google and Motorola), and OEM (Android as most humans know it with carrier branding and skins). This sort of move, however, might push manufacturers and carriers to team up and use a forked version of Android (especially now that Google has agreed to keep Android open and free for five years), which would mean that Google had lost complete control of Android. In fact, because of the tensions between Google, OEMs, and carriers, Charlie Kindel (former Microsoft employee of 21 years and?general manager of the Windows Phone Developer Program) believes that Google has lost control of Android?and will instead begin pursuing the Play brand instead of Android.

Kindel offers four options for Google to pursue to regain control of Android: investing in the Nexus brand, pushing OEMs to upgrade their devices, block Google services from devices that don?t meet Google?s requirements, or switching to a closed source model of Android. Kindel believes that investing in the Nexus brand would be good for consumers, but probably wouldn?t result in more sales than branded and skinned devices. Google can try to demand that OEMs upgrade their devices to the latest version of Android, but that?s easier said than done. Google can?t simply block Google services because there are too many alternatives. Google had the opportunity to switch to?a closed source model of Android before the Motorola deal closed, but even if they had, ICS is already out in the world for anyone to take for free and fork.

In short, Kindel doesn?t see how Google can control Android without upsetting manufacturers. What Kindel couldn?t forsee was Google offering the Nexus program to multiple manufacturers. Google?s main concern isn?t that manufacturers are skinning Android and making all sorts of random devices. Google?s concern is that Android needs to be updated everywhere quickly to ensure that apps are using the latest APIs and to minimize security concerns. Manufacturers are beginning to scale back this year, having realized that a clear product brand and fewer devices will sell better. Samsung?s Galaxy brand has served it well, so HTC is trying again with the One series. Even more importantly, manufacturers like Samsung are pushing back against the carriers this time by making every US carrier call the Galaxy S III by its maiden name, not some carrier specific name.

Google realizes that it needs to choose its battles wisely. While Google may have a very specific vision for what Android should look like, it can?t get that vision out there without the OEMs and the carriers. OEMs don?t want to make stock devices because they want to differentiate themselves and because carriers want special devices. But what happens if Google gives the OEMs something the carriers can?t offer? If Google gives more manufacturers access to the newest version of Android sooner, manufacturers can update their devices faster as market pressure pushes them to make fewer devices. Google wants to shift power away from the carriers towards Google and the OEMs.

In this three way tug-of-war, Google needed an ally. Google thought they were making friends with the carriers, but got burned with more carrier specific devices (which slows updates) and delays from the carriers on Google?s own device. Because of carrier?s push for power, Google is shifting control back to themselves and OEMs. If OEMs have the latest version of Android faster then they can update their devices faster. They?ll still have to wait for carrier approval, but that will be the biggest delay. Google also gets the opportunity to expand its version of Android with more stock devices that they can sell directly to consumers in the Play store.

Google and the manufacturers need power to shift in their direction. The delays in the Galaxy Nexus getting updating prove that. Kindel believes that Google has lost control of Android, but I really think they?re regaining it by shifting power towards themselves and OEMs. As I said before, the carriers need Google and the manufacturers, not the other way around. The launch of the Galaxy S III under one name on all major carriers signals that need. The carriers know that people want those devices, so they want to ensure they keep subscribers. As the cost of unlocked phones continues to drop, leaving a contract is becoming much easier. Google wants to use that to their advantage with their own fleet of Nexus devices sold directly to consumers. By partnering with manufacturers to ensure that they get what they need, Google is taking back control of Android.

Audi cancels A1 and A2 EVs due to pricing concerns

Audi cancels A1 and A2 EVs due to pricing concerns

Audi's A2 and A1 EV concepts have been floating around for a while now, but it looks like neither will make it past the exploratory phase. According to Car Magazine, the auto maker is cancelling production of the two models due to concerns about pricing. The projected cost is apparently just south of $50,000. That's not to say that Audi is giving up on developing EVs entirely, though -- it's still pushing the A3 e-tron pilot program announced earlier this year.

German finance minister firm on eurozone medicine

BERLIN (AP) ? Germany's finance minister is rejecting any idea of watering down the diet of austerity and structural reforms being used to combat the eurozone debt crisis.

Increasing questions have arisen over Berlin's hard line recently as the eurozone's economy stutters and austerity becomes ever more unpopular in struggling nations. But Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble on Tuesday reiterated that sustainable growth can't be generated by running up new debts.

Schaeuble was quoted as telling the daily Handelsblatt: "Saving and growth are not a contradiction. So the (rescue) programs do not deprive countries of purchasing power, as is often asserted."

He insisted that "we cannot spare the affected countries the reforms."

Schaeuble underlined Germany's support for greater European integration in the long term but insisted on a step-by-step approach.
