Syrian regime supporters pelt US envoy with eggs (AP)
BEIRUT ? Angry supporters of President Bashar Assad's regime hurled tomatoes and eggs at the U.S. ambassador to Syria on Thursday as he entered the office of a leading opposition figure and then tried to break into the building, trapping him inside for three hours.
The Obama administration blamed the Syrian government for the attack in Damascus, saying it was part of an ongoing, orchestrated campaign to intimidate American diplomats in the country. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton condemned the attack as "wholly unjustified."
Ambassador Robert Ford, an outspoken critic of Assad's crackdown on the 6-month-old revolt against the regime, has angered Syrian authorities before by showing support for the uprising. The latest incident promises to raise tensions even further.
Ford came under attack by about 100 Assad supporters as he arrived for the meeting with Hassan Abdul-Azim, who heads the outlawed Arab Socialist Democratic Union party. Abdul-Azim is a strong critic of Assad's regime and was briefly detained by authorities earlier this year.
Such incidents are usually not spontaneous in Syria, and Thursday's attack came amid high tension between the two nations, as well as accusations by Damascus that Washington is inciting violence in the country.
The protesters were ready with eggs and tomatoes when the delegation arrived and threw them at the Americans as they entered the building.
In Washington, the State Department said a rowdy, violent mob tried to attack Ford and several American embassy workers in Damascus. Spokesman Mark Toner said Ford and his colleagues were unharmed and are now safe.
However, several heavily armored embassy vehicles sent to help extricate them from the situation were badly damaged with broken windows and dents when the same crowd hurled rocks, White House and State Department officials said.
"This inexcusable assault is clearly part of ongoing campaign of intimidation aimed at diplomats ... who are raising questions about what is going on inside Syria," Clinton said. "It reflects an intolerance on the part of the regime and its supporters."
White House spokesman Jay Carney called the attack "unwarranted and unjustifiable," but said the U.S. had no plans to recall Ford from Damascus.
Trying to keep a low profile, Ford and his colleagues had parked about a block away from Abdul-Azim's office and walked to the building, where they were confronted by the crowd, according to Toner.
Abdul-Azim said Ford was inside his office when the Assad supporters tried to force their way in, breaking some door locks. Office staff prevented them from rushing in, but the ambassador was trapped inside for about three hours. Ford called the U.S. Embassy for help and alerted Syrian authorities to the situation, but Syrian security forces did not show up for more than an hour.
Syria's Foreign Ministry said in a statement that as soon as it was contacted by the U.S. Embassy regarding Ford, it called in security authorities, who "took all measures needed to protect the ambassador and his team and secured their return to their work in accordance with Syria's international commitments."
Speaking to The Associated Press while Ford was still trapped in his office, Abdul-Azim said: "Now that security forces are here, I believe his life is not in danger."
Scores of angry Syrians stood outside the building ready to pelt Ford again if stepped outside. Smashed eggs could be seen at the entrance as several policemen guarded the gate.
"We don't want him anywhere in Syria and if I ever see him I will throw whatever I am carrying at him," said 21-year-old university student Majd Mutlaq, standing outside Abdul-Azim's office with a bag of eggs and tomatoes. Mutlaq said he showed up after he heard the ambassador was inside.
Another man who joined the protesters, construction worker Mohammed Tawil, said: "We don't want the American ambassador here and whoever receives him is an agent."
Ford has angered the Syrian regime in recent months by traveling to centers of protest outside of Damascus in a show of solidarity with the anti-government uprising. The latest incident could further raise tensions between Washington and Damascus, which has accused the United States of helping incite violence in Syria. In August, President Barack Obama demanded Assad resign, saying he had lost legitimacy as a ruler.
The incident occurred nearly two weeks after Abdul-Azim headed a meeting of more than 200 opposition figures inside Syria that called on Assad to end his deadly crackdown or face an escalation of peaceful protests. The gathering was notable because it took place inside Syria, rather than in a neighboring country, as most others have.
The opposition also said they opposed any foreign intervention in Syria or the use of arms to overthrow the regime.
Abdul-Azim said he reiterated that to Ford. "I told the ambassador we are against any foreign intervention in Syrian affairs," he said in a telephone interview.
The attack on Ford came five days after government supporters threw eggs and stones at France's ambassador as he left a meeting in Damascus with a Greek Orthodox patriarch. Ambassador Eric Chevallier was unharmed.
Tensions between the West and Syria ? Iran's closest Arab ally ? have been rising for months.
Washington and the European Union have imposed sanctions on some Syrian officials, including Assad, because of the crackdown that has left some 2,700 people dead, according to the United Nations.
A trip in July by Ford and Chevallier to the central city of Hama to express support for protesters drew swift condemnation from the Syrian government, which said the unauthorized visits were proof that Washington was inciting violence in the Arab nation. Authorities then warned both ambassadors not to travel outside the capital without permission.
A month later, the Obama administration brushed off a complaint by Syrian authorities that Ford had violated the regime's travel rules again by leaving Damascus without permission. The complaint concerned Ford's trip in August to the southern village of Jassem, where he met opposition activists.
Last month, Ford and several other ambassadors expressed their condolences to the family of a rights advocate who was killed.
The U.S. has maintained diplomatic relations with Syria even while protesting Assad's efforts to crush the uprising.
Republicans in Congress assailed Obama's decision to send an ambassador to the Syrian capital after a five-year absence, calling it an unwarranted reward for the government's anti-American positions. Their criticism has grown stronger as more have been killed in the uprising.
But the administration has defended Ford's continued presence in Damascus, insisting that he is providing valuable information on the tumult across Syria while offering moral support to the protesters.
Elsewhere in Syria, the army continued its military operations in the central town of Rastan amid heavy clashed between troops and army defectors, according to the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
The group said four people were killed in Syria Thursday, three of them in the central province of Homs and one in the northwestern province of Idlib.

KINGSTON, Jamaica ? Jamaica's prime minister says he will give a more detailed explanation of his decision to resign sometime after his mother's funeral.
Prime Minister Bruce Golding says he must first bury his mother, Enid, who recently died at age 91. Her burial is Wednesday.
Golding asked journalists on Tuesday to have a little patience in pressing him to talk about his resignation. In his words: "I have just come from the funeral home where I took the last ring off my mother. Bear with me a little bit."
The governing Jamaica Labor Party announced Sunday that Golding will resign once the party picks a new leader.
The 63-year-old Golding had been expected to lead his party into the 2012 general elections. He has been prime minister since 2007.

The USA Downhill and Dual Slalom National Championships were held at the gnarly, muddy course at Beech Mountain, North Carolina, September 24-25, 2011. Logan Binggeli won the Men's Downhill, Mitch Ropelato won the Men's Dual Slalom, and Jill Kintner took the Women's title in both Downhill and Dual Slalom, and did some great interviews for Vital MTB!
Gary Dimartine & Rickey Bates Killed in Tragic Accident
Rickey Bates of Casselbery FL, originator of the Banned BMX videos, along with friend and fellow Banned crew member, Gary Dimartine of Florida,( originally from New Jersey) were killed in an auto accident on Route 93 outside of Phoenix, AZ. They were driving from Las Vegas, NV where they had been at Interbike to promote Banned hard goods. Killed also was Matthew Uhl, a helicopter pilot for the Arizona Department of Public Safety; all three were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. News of the tragedy hit social media quickly and word spread in the BMX and action sports communities. Brian Tunney of ESPN wrote an eloquent memorial tribute on ESPN.com. Condolences go out to the families and friends of three of all the victims.

First stop will be Two by Four (2 x 4) in Pennsville, NJ on October 1, 2011. Then they hit Ed's Bike Shop in Vineland, NJ on October 2 and on to Penn Skate in Allentown, PA on October 4, 2011.

Qualifiers were also held at The Shed in Stellenbosch, Cape Town on September 25, 2011. Four more skaters showed they had the skills to earn the opportunity to skate in the Ams at Maloof: Wesley Schroeder, Shuaib Philander, Marcel van der Walt, and Dyllan Wright.
Tim Brauch Memorial Skate Contest
The 13th annual Tim Brauch Memorial Skate Contest, sponsored by Sessions, is a two-weekend event; the first event was Saturday, September 24, 2011 for the Bowl contests at Lake Cunningham Regional Skatepark in San Jose, CA. The Tim Brauch Memorial Fund was created to provide scholarships for kids and funds for skatepark development, giving back to kids and the sport of skateboarding (Tim Brauch Memorial Fund Press Release, Sept. 2, 2011). Steve Caballero won the Master's Division, Lizzie Armanto the Women's, and Josh Rodriguez won the Men's Division.
On October 1, 2011 the Street Contests will take place in Scott's Valley, CA at the Tim Brauch Memorial Skatepark.

Innovative Money Method ? Coach, Trainer, or Shrink?
In this weeks issue, Atul Gawande considers whether surgeons and other professionals in demanding occupations could benefit from employing coaches to improve their job performance. He notes that coaching has spread from the world of sports to many other walks of life:
There are leadership coaches, executive coaches, life coaches, and college-application coaches. Search the Internet, and youll find that theres even Twitter coaching. Self-improvement has always found a ready market, and most of whats on offer is simply one-on-one instruction to get amateurs through the essentials. Its teaching with a trendier name.
One sports coach whom Gawande cites as a positive example is John Wooden, who led the UCLA mens basketball team to ten national championships. In 1969, Herbert Warren Wind wrote a Sporting Scene article about Wooden and his methods. Wind detailed Woodens famous Pyramid of Success, and quoted the creed, now oft-repeated, that Wooden received from his father: Be true to yourself, make each day a masterpiece, help others, drink deeply from good books, make friendship a fine art, and build a shelter against a rainy day. Even in the late sixties, Wind observed, Wooden was aware that he is regarded in many quarters as an anachronism. What emerges, though, is that Wooden held himself to the same standards as his student-athletes. As a player on the Kautsky Grocers, in the nineteen-thirties, Wooden set a record by making a hundred and thirty-four consecutive foul shots. He recalled to Wind:

Support wavers for U.S. economic aid to Pakistan (Reuters)
WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? Senator Richard Lugar says the U.S. effort to aid Pakistan named after him and two other lawmakers has not had enough time to achieve one of its main goals: dispel Pakistani mistrust of the United States.
Few others in Congress seem keen to give it more time or money.
Following U.S. accusations that some in the Pakistani government have aided anti-U.S. militants, Congress is reevaluating its 2009 promise to triple nonmilitary aid to Pakistan to a total of $7.5 billion over five years.
The non-military aid came on top of billions in security assistance Washington has provided since 2001, and is now rethinking as well.
The economic aid was intended to convince Pakistan the United States could look beyond counterterrorism cooperation and show concern for Pakistan's long-term development, in areas including infrastructure and agricultural.
That approach was heartily endorsed by the Obama administration, and the 2009 law authorizing the aid was named after its sponsors: Lugar, a Republican, and two Democrats, Senator John Kerry and Representative Howard Berman.
But Pakistan's suspicions of the United States do not appear to have eased, and U.S. mistrust of Islamabad definitely has grown. Washington last week said Pakistan's powerful ISI spy agency backed the Afghan Taliban-allied Haqqani network, and provided support for the group's September 13 attack on the U.S. Embassy and NATO headquarters in Kabul.
Now, U.S. congressional appropriators in both the Republican-run House and Democratic-run Senate want to toughen and broaden restrictions on military aid to Pakistan and extend them to economic aid as well.
"Our message to Pakistan is: We can't help you unless you help us," said Senator Lindsey Graham, the top Republican on the Senate foreign aid appropriations subcommittee.
In an interview with Reuters, Graham said he had been a supporter of Kerry-Lugar-Berman, but "there's been a turn there. ... We're not writing checks without being able to identify progress."
Starting next year, lawmakers are proposing to make economic as well as military aid conditional on Pakistan's cooperation in fighting militants such as the Haqqani network.
Such conditions are almost certain to inflame sensitivities further in Pakistan.
The appropriators haven't even bothered to specify an amount of new economic aid for Pakistan for fiscal 2012, leaving it to the Obama administration to come back to Congress and request funding if the conditions are met.
The proposals must be approved by the full House and Senate and are subject to running budget battles in Congress.
A LOST APPETITE
Other key senators also sound unenthusiastic about voting more aid to Pakistan, even if it means backing down on the Kerry-Lugar-Berman promise.
"I am very reluctant to vote for the additional economic aid while they are giving support to the Haqqani group. ... So I'd be very reluctant to vote for anything like Kerry-Lugar," Democratic Senator Carl Levin, the chairman of the Armed Services Committee, told Reuters outside the Senate this week.
"I think that Congress has lost its appetite for dealing with a country that is clearly in some ways a friend of the United States, and in other ways hedging its bets and siding with those who are placing our forces at risk," said Karl Inderfurth, assistant U.S. secretary of state for South Asian affairs in the Clinton administration.
The nation's top military officer said last week that U.S. aid to Pakistan needs to be conditioned. But Admiral Mike Mullen also warned lawmakers to be careful: "I think it's a very dangerous long-term outcome should we cut it (aid) off."
Lugar told Reuters that one reason the Kerry-Lugar-Berman program has not yet had a chance to work is that very little money had actually been spent. That is due in part to disagreements between the U.S. and the Pakistani government about how programs will be administered, he said.
The U.S. Agency for International Development says that in the last two years, nearly $2 billion in U.S. economic aid had been disbursed to Pakistan, but that just $534 million could be considered Kerry-Lugar-Berman funding. Some of the rest was disaster aid, or linked to other U.S. programs.
Lugar still thinks American development aid could help change perceptions about the United States in Pakistan, where poverty is widespread. "It could and would have, but it won't unless the money is spent," he said in a brief interview outside the Senate.
"I think it's a good approach, but the question is what our overall relationship will be" with Pakistan, he added.
Berman, in a statement e-mailed to Reuters, said Americans were "right to be frustrated with Pakistan" but warned against any blanket cutting off of aid.
This "may make us feel good in the short term, but will only harm our long-term interests in Afghanistan, Pakistan and the rest of South Asia," Berman said.
Development experts worry that the proposed restrictions on economic aid will thwart the main purpose of the law. It "was supposed to be an investment in the well-being of the Pakistani people," said Daniel Cutherell, a policy analyst at the Center for Global Development.
"Tying civilian economic aid to security indicators ... demonstrates that all U.S. aid is simply payment for cooperation on security issues," Cutherell said.

Southern California Grocery Strike Averted: Workers Approve Deal
LOS ANGELES ? Southern California grocery employees have voted to ratify a new contract with supermarket chains, bringing an end to months of conflict and averting a strike that could have crippled the industry and left shoppers scrambling.
United Food and Commercial Workers local spokeswoman Ellen Anreder said Saturday that after two days of voting, members agreed to the deal as their leaders had urged.
Union officials say the agreement ? reached with the region's three major grocery chains after a strike deadline had passed Monday ? addresses concerns about funding for the employees' health plan, the main sticking point during the months of negotiations.
The union did not release the vote totals.

Shoppers in Southern California waited Saturday for word on whether major grocery stores would remain open, as a final wave of supermarket employees voted on a deal with grocers to stave off a strike.
It was the second day of voting on a deal that union leaders negotiated this week with the region's three largest grocery chains, Vons, Ralphs and Albertsons. They urged their rank-and-file to ratify the plan, which they said addressed concerns about funding for the employees' health plan, the main sticking point during months of negotiations.
The supermarkets, meanwhile, said the agreement would allow them to remain competitive.
Polls were being kept open for two extra hours, until 8 p.m., so that members of United Food and Commercial Workers who want to vote would have the chance, union spokeswoman Ellen Anreder said. Union officials would be quick to tally votes, but it was not clear how long that would take, she said.
Details of the tentative agreement reached Monday were made available to members for the first time as they filed into their union locals' headquarters or other voting locations to cast their ballots on Friday and Saturday.
"I think they will be elated with the end result, and I believe they will vote in overwhelming numbers to ratify it," said Greg Conger, president of Local 324, one of the locals representing 62,000 grocery employees who have been working without a contract since March.
If ratified, the deal would end months of sometimes testy discussions between union officials and representatives of The Vons Cos.; Ralphs Grocery Co., a subsidiary of The Kroger Co.; and Albertsons, which is owned by Supervalu Inc.
Ralphs had indicated it would initially close all 250 of its stores if there had been a strike; Albertsons had said it could shutter up to 100 locations, while Vons had said its stores would remain open.
The prospect of shuttered stores and tense picket lines prompted fears of a repeat of the four-month strike eight years ago that cost the industry $2 billion and created a mess for shoppers.
This time around, with unemployment at 12.1 percent in California, workers evidently feared that they would find little public sympathy if they voluntarily walked off the job.
The market chains, meanwhile, were likely reluctant to invite shutdowns and picket lines that might alienate shoppers already spending less due to the economic downturn.
Union leaders and the markets announced in July that they had reached a tentative agreement on the employers' contributions to pension benefits, but remained far apart on payments to the union health care trust fund.
Union members voted overwhelmingly last month to authorize their leaders to call a strike. Those leaders said they were responding to what they characterized as the chains' delaying tactics when they issued the required 72-hour notice Thursday evening to cancel the contract extension under which they had been working since March.
But after the Sunday evening deadline came and went with neither a strike nor a deal, store employees returned to work. Union officials announced late Monday morning that the tentative deal had been reached.

What Is The Best Exercise For Osteoporosis?
Women achieve their maximum bone mass in their early 20?s. The more bone mass you accumulated before that age, the more likely you are to have healthy, strong bones later in life. Yet studies show that by the age of 16, only 11% of girls are involved in regular physical activity. Studies also show that active mothers and fathers are more likely to have active children.

Endurance sports, such as excessive long-distance running, also pose a risk.
Over-exercising causes athletes to lose so much body fat that they can?t maintain the hormone levels needed to achieve optimal bone density. That can mean fractures later in life. And stress fractures in the bones of the foot, legs and ribs are more common in these young athletes.
Treating this type of bone loss needs a team approach, so that other issues, like eating disorders, can be addressed.
