Innovative Money Method ? Coach, Trainer, or Shrink?

In this weeks issue, Atul Gawande considers whether surgeons and other professionals in demanding occupations could benefit from employing coaches to improve their job performance. He notes that coaching has spread from the world of sports to many other walks of life:

There are leadership coaches, executive coaches, life coaches, and college-application coaches. Search the Internet, and youll find that theres even Twitter coaching. Self-improvement has always found a ready market, and most of whats on offer is simply one-on-one instruction to get amateurs through the essentials. Its teaching with a trendier name.

One sports coach whom Gawande cites as a positive example is John Wooden, who led the UCLA mens basketball team to ten national championships. In 1969, Herbert Warren Wind wrote a Sporting Scene article about Wooden and his methods. Wind detailed Woodens famous Pyramid of Success, and quoted the creed, now oft-repeated, that Wooden received from his father: Be true to yourself, make each day a masterpiece, help others, drink deeply from good books, make friendship a fine art, and build a shelter against a rainy day. Even in the late sixties, Wind observed, Wooden was aware that he is regarded in many quarters as an anachronism. What emerges, though, is that Wooden held himself to the same standards as his student-athletes. As a player on the Kautsky Grocers, in the nineteen-thirties, Wooden set a record by making a hundred and thirty-four consecutive foul shots. He recalled to Wind:
