Libya Says NATO Strikes Targeted State ... - Morrison World News

NATO strikes killed three employees of Libya?s state broadcaster in Tripoli Saturday and wounded 15 others, Libyan officials said.

The pre-dawn strike targeted the facilities of the Libyan Broadcasting Authority, said Khaled Bazelya, the director of state television?s English channel.

He described the attack as ?an act of international terrorism? and a violation of United Nations Security Council resolutions.

NATO claimed responsibility for the bombing raid on state television headquarters. Just a few hours after the attack, the alliance said it was aimed at ?silencing (Moammar) Gadhafi?s terror broadcasts.?

The precision air strike disabled three Libyan state TV satellite transmission dishes in Tripoli, NATO said.

?The strike, performed by NATO fighter aircraft using state-of-the art precision guided munitions, was conducted in accordance with the U.N. Security Council Resolution 1973, with the intent of degrading Gadhafi?s use of satellite television as a means to intimidate the Libyan people and incite acts of violence against them.?

Bazelya spoke to international reporters at brief news conference surrounded by state television employees, just hours after the Libyan capital was pounded by a rare, day-time round of airstrikes.

Bazelya appealed to the international community for protection of Libyan journalists and said working for the Libyan government does not make them a legitimate target.

?We are the employees of the official Libyan TV,? he said. ?We are not a military target, we are not commanders in the army and we do not pose a threat to civilians. We are performing our job as journalists representing what we wholeheartedly believe is the reality of NATO?s aggression and the violence in Libya.?

NATO jets struck three buildings within the broadcaster?s compound, he said.

NATO did not report casualties.

?After due consideration and careful planning to minimize the risks of casualties or long-term damage to television transmission capabilities, NATO performed the strike and we are now in the process of assessing its effect,? NATO said.

Since the war?s start more than five months ago, state media has played a key role in a campaign to rally popular support for Gadhafi?s embattled regime.

Continuous broadcasts highlight pro-Gadhafi rallies, often urging supporters to join in daily mass demonstrations organized by the government.

Every night, television presenters broadcast from makeshift studios in the basement of a hotel housing the dwindling and carefully-controlled foreign press contingent in Tripoli.

Libyan broadcasters defend the regime, condemn NATO, and sometimes denounce what they say is a biased campaign by the foreign media against the government in Tripoli.

?Gadhafi?s increasing practice of inflammatory broadcasts illustrates his regime?s policy to instill hatred amongst Libyans, to mobilize its supporters against civilians and to trigger bloodshed? NATO said.

Despite Saturday?s bombings, there appeared to be no interruption in the broadcast of pro-Gadhafi television channels.

Libya has never had a free press, according to international media watchdogs. In 2010, the Paris-based group Reporters Without Borders listed Libya 160 out of 178 countries on its press freedoms index.

?Before the 2011 uprising in eastern Libya, nearly all the country?s media outlets were state-controlled or tied to Moammar Gadhafi,? the group wrote in a more recent report.

?The mainstream media have long been under his control and now the regime is trying to completely stifle the news in a bid to crush the revolt and the reporting of its repression,? it said.

Access to the internet as well as mobile phone text messaging have been virtually shut down in Tripoli since anti-government protests erupted last February.

Britain's Supreme Court on Wednesday defeated a bid by George Lucas' company to stop a prop designer making and selling replicas of the iconic stormtrooper helmets from the "Star Wars" films. The court did, however, prevent him from selling them in the United States.

Andrew Ainsworth sculpted the white helmets worn by the sinister galactic warriors in the original "Star Wars" film in 1977, and now sells replica costumes, made from the original molds, over the Internet. Lucasfilm Ltd. has been trying for years to stop him, in a battle that has climbed through the British courts.

Lucasfilm's lawyers argued that the stormtrooper suits are sculptures and therefore works of art covered by British copyright law. Two lower courts ruled in 2008 and 2009 that the costumes were props, not artworks, and so covered by a much shorter copyright period that has now expired.

The country's highest court on Wednesday upheld those decisions. The panel of five judges said "it was the 'Star Wars' film that was the work of art that Mr. Lucas and his companies created. The helmet was utilitarian in the sense that it was an element in the process of production of the film."

But the judges agreed with Lucasfilm's lawyers ? and a lower court ? that Ainsworth had violated Lucas's copyright in the United States by selling costumes there.

Ainsworth's attorney, Seamus Andrew, said that means the designer may have to pay damages to Lucasfilm for the U.S. sales, but they are likely to be minor because he did not sell much merchandise there. The judges said Ainsworth had sold between $8,000 and $30,000 worth of goods in the U.S.

Andrew said that on the broader issue, "our client won, without a doubt."

He said the Supreme Court had been asked: "Could our client continue to manufacture and sell replica helmets and suits of armor without any form of license from George Lucas? And he can."

Ainsworth, 62, said he was delighted.

"I am proud to report that in the English legal system David can prevail against Goliath if his cause is right," he said. "If there is a Force, then it has been with me these past five years."

Lucasfilm said that "unfortunately" the court had upheld an "anomaly of British copyright law under which the creative and highly artistic works made for use in films ? which are protected by the copyright laws of virtually every other country in the world ? may not be entitled to copyright protection in the U.K."

The eminent Supreme Court judges may be experts in law, but their ruling revealed gaps in their knowledge of science fiction. The judgment said the "Star Wars" movies are set "in an imaginary, science-fiction world of the future."

Film fans know that they take place "a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away."

Hosni Mubarak will see trial from inside metal cage

Hosni Mubarak is well enough to be moved from a hospital in the Sinai resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, where he is under arrest, to Cairo. He will face charges of corruption and ordering the killings of protesters during the uprising that toppled him in February.

Hosni Mubarak's trial will be set in a huge Cairo convention center with hundreds of seats for an audience, heavy security and a metal defendants' cage large enough to hold the man who ruled Egypt unchallenged for three decades, his two sons and seven associates, judicial officials have said.

Health Minister Amr Helmy said on Thursday that the 83-year-old Mubarak is well enough to be moved from a hospital in the Sinai resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, where he is under arrest, to Cairo. He will face charges of corruption and ordering the killings of protesters during the uprising that toppled him in February.

"Mubarak's health is in appropriate condition for him to be tried in Cairo," Helmy told reporters.

Protests have escalated recently clamoring for Mubarak and other former regime stalwarts to be brought to justice over the killings of protesters and other crimes over the years. Many activists say the ruling military council which took power from the ousted president ? and is headed by Mubarak's former defense minister ? is dragging its feet on the prosecutions.

A few hundred hard-core protesters have erected a tent camp in Cairo's Tahrir Square ? the epicenter of the uprising ? to press for speedier trials, and a march last week to the headquarters of the Supreme Council of the Armed forces ended with more than 100 people injured after men armed with rocks and sticks attacked them.

Many protesters received the announcement with deep skepticism.

"I think they will find some excuse for him not to come to Cairo," said activist Marwa Nasser. "We've been guessing that they'll announce that he's dead, or that security reasons keep him from going on TV. Even if he comes, people doubt that we'll ever see him in the cage or on TV."

The plans for the trial venue show the judiciary wants to make it a public spectacle.

Deputy Justice Minister Mohammed Munie told state news agency MENA that a final decision has been made to hold the trial at Cairo's Convention Center, not far from Mubarak's Cairo home and normally a venue for book fairs and trade shows.

Munie said a large building within the center will be outfitted with enough chairs for lawyers, a special section for journalists and seating for "an audience that is connected to the case" ? likely to include relatives of about 850 people killed during the uprising.

Electronic doors will be installed at entrances, and the army and the interior ministry will handle security.

A member of a judicial team that visited the building Thursday said the trial room would probably have stadium-style seating for hundreds of people. Speaking on condition of anonymity because final decisions had not been made, he said the team was considering erecting large screens around the convention center to allow others to watch from outside.

Inside the courtroom will be an iconic scene from Egyptian trials ? a single metal cage where the accused are held. Under the old regime, the media often featured images of Mubarak foes seated in such cages.

Munie said the convention center cage will be large enough to hold Mubarak, his two sons and seven of their associates who have been lumped together in one case. There is an 11th defendant who is being tried in absentia.

Mubarak's sons Alaa and Gamal, who have been in a Cairo prison since April, are facing charges of corruption.Mubarak had been grooming Gamal to succeed him before his ouster. Prominent businessman and Mubarakconfidant Hussein Salem is being tried in absentia. He has fled to Spain, and Egypt is demanding his extradition.

Former Interior Minster Habib el-Adly and six high-ranking security officers are charged with ordering the killing of protesters during the 18-day uprising.

The former president is being tried for both corruption and ordering the killings of protesters. His family is suspected of amassing billions of dollars from corrupt business dealings while nearly half the 85 million people in his country subsisted at poverty levels around $2 a day or less.

Frequent reports that Mubarak's health has been faltering raised speculation that the trial would be held in Sharm el-Sheikh, the Red Sea resort where he has been under arrest in a hospital. Most recently, doctors treating Mubarak said he was weak and had lost weight from refusing to eat. They also said he suffers from severe depression.

That led to speculation that the trial could be delayed because of health reasons ? something that would likely infuriate protesters and activists.

Khaled Sayed of the Muslim Brotherhood's youth movement said the announcement shows the need for protesters to keep pressure on the army, but he still doesn't expect to see Mubarak's trial any time soon.

"I doubt it, but as long as there is a schedule for the trial, we have to be patient to see if it happens," he said. "If it doesn't, then we have to reveal the scandal of the military council to the public."

An appeals judge must still formally announce Mubarak's transfer to Cairo. But according to Egyptian law, the defendant must physically appear in court.

"Egyptian law stipulates that a judge must hear the defendant's testimony with his own ear, and physically be in the same room as the defendant," Nasser Amin, a lawyer with the Arab Center for the Independence of the Judiciary, told The Associated Press.

July 26--A University of Arizona professor and physician was a central figure behind last week's controversial recommendation that the federal government require insurers to cover women's contraception for free.

The recommendation from a leading medical advisory panel set off a firestorm of outrage last week as critics of the proposal, including the Roman Catholic Church, argued that pregnancy is not a disease and that fertility is not a condition to be suppressed.

"Birth control is such a nuanced thing because it has so many other benefits," said Dr. Francisco A. R. Garcia, a gynecologist and professor at the UA's Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health. With pregnancy, "There are things that happen, especially for women who have certain medical conditions, or in certain age groups. Every once in a while, women die. So having access to birth control is essential."

Garcia, who directs the UA's Center of Excellence in Women's Health, is one of 16 members of the Institute of Medicine panel that is advising the Obama administration about coverage of women's health services under the new federal health-care law. He is the only member from Arizona.

The panel is chaired by Dr. Linda Rosenstock, dean of the School of Public Health at UCLA. The Institute of Medicine is the nonprofit, nongovernment health arm of the National Academy of Sciences.

The panel's report last week included eight key recommendations for no-cost health services that insurers should provide for women under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, the new federal health law.

The recommendation that got the most attention was that insurers should cover all federally approved women's contraception, including emergency contraceptives like Plan B and Ella, free of charge with no co-payments or cost sharing.

Unplanned pregnancies can have vast and detrimental health consequences, Garcia said. Women with unplanned pregnancies are more likely to receive late prenatal care or none, which then has a consequence for both the mother and the baby. Women with unplanned pregnancies are also more likely to use tobacco and alcohol and experience domestic violence, and their babies are more likely to have problems with having a low birth weight.

I?ve tried a series of fitness games over the years and very few have yielded results. Fewer have left me with the proper motivation to get fit. The Wii Fit Board will ask you to ?Step on? when you want to start an exercise and ?great? when you step on the board. BUT when I ?Step On? during any exercise, I am met with an ?Oh?? response. The last thing anyone needs, before an exercise is a condescending response from an electronic device.

If you can sense my skepticism and cynical behavior to fitness games, then you?ll understand when I say I?m going to carefully analyze and measure UFC? trainer game.

First off, you need to have a lot of space when using this game. If you are using the bare minimum space for the PS MOVE or KINECT, you are going to have a tough time using this game. I had to move some furniture around before I started. The series of: push-ups, jumping jacks, sit-ups, bicycle curls, etc. will most likely break any fragile items that aren?t properly secured. Once this is set up, the game sets you up with detailed information about your health and makes recommendations for healthy activities and calorie intake. My program has set me up for 1,975 calorie intake on a daily basis. There?s a series of different workout programs (30-60 day programs) based on your choice of: strength training, weight loss or endurance.

Once you select a 30 or 60 day program, the computer maps out your program in the UFC calendar mode and monitors your progress through every one of your exercises. You?re scored based on how well you perform in each exercise, but the grading system and awards leave some confusion at the end. I don?t understand how I can receive A+ on four different exercises, but I received 3 bronze awards and 1 silver awards from those exercises. The criteria for gold, silver, and bronze awards is a mystery to me.

The most annoying feature is the constant repetition of comments made by the fighters/trainers that are helping you in your fitness program. I heard the Greg Jackson repeat the phrase, ?We?re priming ourselves for a great workout? at least 15 times in a one minute exercise ( sometimes 2-3 times in a row).

After you get past moving all your furniture around, repetitive phrases, and multiple controller configurations, the workouts are actually engaging and motivating. I needed to complete 10 leg lunges in under a minute, but once I hit that requirement (in 45 seconds) the computer encourage me to go beyond the 10 lunges. I was able to do 13 leg lunges the first day and the computer encouraged me to go beyond the 13 on the next day.

One incredible feature is the game?s ability to stop, after a series of exercises, to make sure I slow my heart rate or prevent dehydration. This is a feature I haven?t seen in the other fitness games. This is a plus in my mind since one can easily be swept away in multiple exercises and do more damage to one?s health. There?s the ability to create a custom workout, but I chose to follow the game?s exercise layout.

Unlocking the UFC videos provides helpful information and tips. There?s an impressive introduction video on motivating yourself with a mirror that helped me get into UFC trainer.

There?s a fun series of exercises you can do with different UFC fighters (i.e. Jon Jones, Forest Griffin, Calin Velasquez, etc.), but I discovered some exercises are a little more effective with two MOVE controllers. When the controllers work, you can get caught up in a series of quick workouts. You can plan to do a simple 20 minute workout, but get caught up doing 40-50 minutes of exercises.

The game provides a multiplayer mode where you can compete (side by side) with a friend or send a challenge (through the PSN message board) to someone on your friends list. I sent a challenge to TrickyMic, but I don?t think he?ll accept the challenge.

I?d love to tell you that the game produces results, but I only started this game on a June 16, 2011. It?s hard to measure any weight loss or muscle accumulation after one day. In order to test out UFC Personal Trainer, I have chosen a 30 day workout program and will report my progress (through weekly comments) for you to read. I have also decided to post my appearance in this article and I will post another image, after 30 days, so you can compare the ?before? and ?after? pictures. This is a tough thing for me to do since I don?t like to have my picture taken, but I?m doing this to help you see if UFC Personal Trainer works.

To prove that I will dedicate myself to this 30 day program, I?ve decided to share my average workout routine to prove that I won?t give up after two days:

6-8 mile jog/walks (5-6 days a week).

A set of 15 push ups for every mile I jog/walk (90-120 push ups).

Perform 200 jumping jacks a day (7days a week).

A set of 10 sit ups for every mile I jog/walk (60-80 sit ups).

A set of 10 arm curls with 25 pound dumbbells (six times) every other day

7-9 glasses of water a day (based on how the length of my runs).

A bowl of cheerios in the morning.

Diet of yogurt, low sodium pretzels, and crackers throughout the day.

Occasionally 2-3 glasses of iced tea throughout the day.

My workout has helped me go from 210 pounds to 180 pounds. I will reduce my normal exercise routine and combine it with UFC Personal Trainer (so I don?t put myself in any danger). I will also follow UFC Personal Trainer?s advice on BMR formula (Basal Metabolic Rate formula = 1975 calories daily) to help optimize my progress. After 30 days, I will report my progress to you and you can decide for yourself. See you in 30 days.

World economy to keep strong but risks abound: Reuters poll (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? The world economy should expand steadily this year and next thanks mainly to prospering emerging powers, a Reuters poll showed, but fiscal troubles lurking in Europe and potentially the United States risk blowing this view apart.

The quarterly survey of more than 350 economists from all over the world showed a dimmer outlook for most of the rich-world Group of Seven economies since the last survey in April.

Only Germany, booming thanks to buoyant exports, is expected to post growth averaging more than 3 percent this year. Elsewhere, fiscal austerity in Europe and growing debt fears have soured analysts' sentiment.

By contrast, emerging powers like China have enjoyed near double-digit annual growth rates since the global recession -- but they face risks of their own, struggling to contain rampant inflation that has accompanied fervent growth.

Economists pointed to the fiscal crisis raging in the euro zone's peripheral countries and the political deadlock in the United States surrounding an increasingly urgent lift to the country's legal debt ceiling as the biggest risks to global economic growth.

"If the (euro zone) debt crisis is mishandled, it's a major threat. But it's a threat comparable to the mishandling of the U.S. sovereign debt crisis. It's six and two threes," said Willem Buiter, chief economist at Citi.

The poll showed the world economy expanding 4.1 percent this year and 4.3 percent next year, little changed from April's survey.

Buiter said that authorities in emerging markets are largely behind the curve in monetary policy, which could leave open the prospect that their boom could become a bubble and then a bust -- but not for a couple of years.

While economists cut their U.S. economic outlook compared with a poll published last month, they still see the United States performing better this year than struggling European peers like Britain, Italy and France.

They saw the U.S. economy growing an average 2.5 percent this year, before picking up to 3.0 percent next year -- comfortably in excess of the sub-2 percent growth rates seen for this year for Europe's G7 members, excluding Germany.

"It was the surge in oil and gasoline prices that hurt the (U.S.) economy the most in the first half, and now that they're down, that should take the weight off," said Mark Zandi, chief economist of Moody's Analytics.

The dimming U.S. outlook has had a knock-on effect for Canadian growth prospects this year, with economists applying a hefty downgrade to their quarterly growth profiles.

DEFAULT?

Still, the focus over the next few months will be averting sovereign defaults in both the euro zone and the United States. While the euro zone question is one of fundamental solvency, most notably in Greece, the U.S. problem is a political one.

Economists remain confident that U.S. lawmakers will reach a deal to raise the government's debt ceiling. All but two of 40 economists polled said a deal would be reached.

"They will squeak something out, but the odds of failure have increased," said Chris Lowe, chief economist for FTN Financial and one of the economists surveyed.

The poll was conducted from Friday to Wednesday and was completed before House Republican leader Eric Cantor said President Barack Obama walked out of a meeting on Wednesday evening, escalating concerns about the negotiations.

Lawmakers disagree over budget deficit reduction measures that are a condition for extending the legal $14.3 trillion borrowing limit -- needed so the U.S. government can fund its commitments next month.

In Europe, Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou said the euro zone and International Monetary Fund must quickly approve a bailout to avoid a collapse of Greece's economic reform plans.

While Germany has recently topped the European -- and G7 -- growth charts, peripheral strugglers like Greece, Ireland, Spain and Italy will drag hard on the euro zone's economic performance.

The 17-nation bloc's economy will probably grow just 0.4 percent per quarter from here until next April. That would be slower than the 0.8 percent rise seen in the first quarter of this year.

Economists in the poll also left their 2011 and 2012 growth forecasts unchanged at 2.0 and 1.7 percent, respectively. By contrast, the German GDP growth outlook for this year and next was 3.4 percent and 1.9 percent.

"Germany's growth will remain above average, by historic and euro zone standards, so long as the euro zone doesn't totally fall apart and leave just a core group of countries remaining," said Timo Klein, an economist at IHS Global Insight.

Unlike Germany, Britain's economy probably struggled to generate meaningful growth in the second quarter and its prospects ahead look likely to be jaded by fierce fiscal austerity measures and high inflation.

JAPAN RECOVERS

Japan's recovery from the March 11 earthquake and tsunami that killed at least 21,000 people looks likely to proceed at a faster pace than thought even last month, helped by a restoration of factory output.

Although Japan, the world's third-largest economy likely contracted for a third straight quarter in April-June, it is likely to emerge from recession this quarter as it shakes off supply constraints more quickly than expected, according to the poll of around 30 economists.

"Automakers are pushing forward production plans and companies are making efforts to limit the impact of summer power shortages on output," said Takumi Tsunoda, senior economist at Shinkin Central Bank Research Institute.

"We expect factory output to normalize in July-September."
